The big factor is that the inflationary pressures of commerce have already impacted the Big Island economy. Most years of the Kim administration have seen nearly unbridled economic growth in both development and tourism. Already that bubble is collapsing with the mighty pullback in development, collapse of real estate sales, and Island visitors. Lloyd Bentsen, Dukakis’s running mate in 1988 said it best; if you gave him authority to write a blank check, he could make everyone feel good. And, of course, that is what happened during the Reagan-Bush years when the national debt increased 600 percent. The big difference is that the federal government controls the money printing presses, a luxury the Big Island does not have.

It is unfortunate that you feel Mr. Higa’s chance is rather minimal. I feel he has been an effective Council member. If people had a better understanding of the EEO process, they would know that this quasi-federal tribunal has strange rules and policies to follow and Mr. Higa is improperly and unjustifiably implicated with wrongdoing when that was not even an issue in the case that has received so much press.

I agree with you that Ms. Inoyue has yet to establish an effective campaign. She seems to be relying on name recognition but her base is a blast to the past. Her presentation of accomplishments seems to focus on her career at the state level and her attachment back to the County level has yet to be presented in detail.

Mr. Kenoi makes his link to the Kim years and as you point out he has great backing and diverse support. We see that the current administration that Mr. Kenoi chooses to emulate was very comfortable to let things drift along. A major earthquake two years ago still does not have in place the refinements promised in civil defense. It is unknown if all the warning sirens are functioning, if they could operate during a power failure, if the radio stations have functioning back-up generators, and so forth. One can host community sessions and committee meetings for all sorts of issues, such as health care, and the system still collapses. The next major natural event is likely to impact Hilo very hard and one should be concerned that the last 8 years have not improved the ability to respond well to the needs of the biggest population center of the Island.

You give points to Mr. Kenoi for having an adventurous youth and I support that. Those events are learning experiences for which there can be no substitute. An analysis of candidate Pilago’s personal biography would reveal that he had a youth as adventurous as Mr. Kenoi’s.

It is true that Mr. Pilago’s campaign is one of seeking the grass root support and a strong tie to fundamental character values. But his great care and concern of upholding the history and cultural values should not be a negative. It shows his willingness to have an open administration, one that genuinely seeks input by the citizenry and involves all levels of government, not sequestering itself from the Council as the current administration does. This Island State will observe its 50th anniversary of Statehood next year and it is not improper to maintain respect for the culture of the Island Nation that came before.

During the past years when Mr. Pilago was a Council Member, his district had the greatest economic development of any on the Island. Although Mr. Pilago gives the impression of being soft spoken, he carries a big stick in getting things resolved. He has the ability to organize, compromise when necessary, and gather consensus. He is certainly qualified to deal with the myriad of technical issues challenging the next mayor, from energy, health, education, and infrastructure. While careful not to micromanage he demonstrates his control and wise selection of important issues. When needed, he has shown he can make the hard decisions that may not always be popular but will serve the people best.

Leadership is defined best as successful response in time of crisis. The crisis for the Big Island is already in the making and the current administration has not poised the Island well to meet this challenge.

When voters go to the poles they have a choice of an administration of the past, the status quo, or one that has presented and clearly represents a chance for leadership during the times of crisis. They may agonize over their selection as it is a hard and perhaps an emotional choice.

How great this race for mayor will be will depend on voter turnout. It may be that people are turned off and burned out by politics being immersed in boring Democratic and Republic conventions where there is no choice and speeches are simply party rhetoric and the press tries to create stories where none exist.

But there yet may be a horserace for mayor of the Big Island with candidates registering somewhat differently than your ranking! Stay tuned!

Brian comments on Hey Pete, c'mon down, take a look

You must be joking I agree about the dragsters. The police have had a presence their for three months and written numerous tickets. We may need a civilian complaint ordnance. After reckless drivers get three complaints (lets say in a year) called into the police, they must appear before a judge and pay $500 fine. Then they attend mandatory driving classes which take up a weekend. Or they can spend
30 cleaning roadsides in lieu of the fine.

pohaikalani comments on The mayoral horses are out of the gate

After having the Waikoloa Lions sponsor this evenings Mayor Forum. I know more than ever that my vote is secure in Angel Pilago! I will not vote for Lorraine because she's arrogant and I don't believe our next Mayor should be arrogant or be someone who has had a chance to "make a difference" and did not! Kenoi, although well groomed and well versed is young...too young! He has potential to lead, next time. He needs a few years under his belt of "politicking" before getting the "big seat"! Jasper Moore was a pleasant surprise, a breath of fresh air. I caught him "being real" even though he hasn't a chance in hell to win this one...if given time to polish his style of politicking, he would be very appealing to the masses. Sam Masilimoney, needs to take a real look at his character. I won't say any more than that!! So, Angel has got my vote because I trust him and I hope I can continue to trust him long after he takes the Mayors office! My main interest in Angel is that he is a "cultural preservationist" and that for me is the "bottom line"!

damon comments on CDP showdown Friday in Puna

Activist(s)... *cough*

I've heard that word used before.... Billy may be the youngest, but Angel is the most forward-thinking. When I first went to Billy's website, I was impressed - it was flashy, slick. But if you really want to know what he stands for, it is hard to tell. I have heard him speak and was impressed. He is a good entertainer, but when you are deciding on who you are going to vote for mayor at this very critical time in our island's history, you have to go with someone who is unquestionably honest and whose priorities are clear and evident. His record on caring for the aina is evidence enough for me as to where his values are and what he will advocate for, as mayor. We need someone who will be pono about the needs of the community as a whole, and not just special interests who have their own agendas. We need a wise and compassionate leader. That's Angel.

Jesse Ebersole comments on The mayoral horses are out of the gate

Old Hilo Japanee,
Not me this time, I prefer to use my given name. He has my vote here in Kohala and I believe he will have the support of Kohala and Kanaka Maoli and native hawaiians on the island of Hawaii. Angel has done grassroots work in the past and that is important with today's generation because we are tired of the "good ole boy networks" and tired of those from the network GROOMING someone into politics. In my opinion, Mr. Kenoi is just a pretty boy and pretty boys don't like to get in the dirt - we have lots of cleaning and maintenance work to do for Hawaii County and while we do this work we must be mindful of not compromising to save "face". The good of the people is what's important, not "looking good". .
