'Weed biocontrol' plan unconvincing

I see in the draft environment assessment that there are two reasons given for the state's planned strawberry guava attack.

Tucker rips county parks director

Rob Tucker, who moderates the Punaweb Forum and helped found Friends of Puna's Future, tries to effect change by using good information, common sense and persistent moderation in his approach to getting the County to recognize that Puna is not getting the services it should be. But Tucker apparently reached the end of his rope recently, resulting in a scathing critique of Parks and Rec Director Pat Engelhard's performance in Puna, which was published Friday on Punaweb Forum and in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Sunday. It's worth a read if you haven't seen it.

Herkes gets under Harry Kim's skin

Rep. Bob Herkes (D-Puna, Ka'u, S. Kona) apparently hit a nerve with Harry Kim with his letter to the governor about the state's readiness to deal with volcano problems.

Incinerator plan dead by a vote

The Fifth District's Emily Naeole held her ground against the waste-to-energy incinerator Wednesday while Councilman J Yoshimoto turned in favor of continuing to study the project. But it wasn't enough to change the result and the Wheelabrator project went down with a thud at the Council Council meeting.

Route 130 safety: Still 'no can'

A tip of the hat to  Aaron Stene at Kona Blog for this link to an article on roundabouts at HeraldNet, in Everett, Washington.

I've seen state Department of Transportation activity in Puna Makai of late -- lots of vehicle counters and small crews of Honolulu-attired DOT people looking intently at traffic from Pahoa High School to the Keaau bottleneck. But I don't know if it's just for the long-term four-lane project or whether they have immediate improvements on their mind.

End the dance with Wheelabrator

Janet Snyder from Harry Kim's office e-mailed me Mayor Kim's testimony to the County Council on the Wheelabrator deal and noted that the "make or break" date is May 7, when the Council considers the Finance Committee's 6-3 rejection of the mayor's WTE incinerator plan.

Turn your radio on, support urgent care

Dan Domizio is scheduled to be the guest on Gary Safarik's Insight radio show Monday at 8 a.m. on KHBC 1060 AM and 92.7 FM. Domizio's urgent care medical facility being planned at Pahoa Marketplace is one of the best things going in Puna and should have all our support. So listen in, give the show a call, and support the project any way you can. I couldn't make it to the meeting in Pahoa Thursday on suggestions for using the geothermal funds, but if I had gone, I would have said there's no better use for that money in Puna than this sorely needed project.

But don't the radio ads sound swell?

A tip of the hat to Damon for this timely link to an article about the bitter end of a Wheelabrator deal in New England. Here's the nut of it:

"It's the official end to Enron-style business arrangement between Wheelabrator Corp. and 29 towns in the Connecticut River Valley," Gallagher said. "Claremonters and townspeople were overcharged millions of dollars. This ends a tragedy."

How could I forget Main Street?

Pahoa Main Street Association secretary Chris Scherr e-mailed me on Monday with a reminder about the meeting tonight, April 9, 6-8 p.m. at the Community Center. Then I forgot to include it in the lengthy list of local meetings I published that night. I knew there was one I was forgetting.

The agenda includes discussion of the association's goals for 2008 and ways to support the Pahoa Spring Jamm on May 10. Everyone's invited, friends, neighbors, especially business owners and managers -- anyone who wants to help make Pahoa a better place to live.
