Charter school hosts mayor's forum
There's a mayor's campaign forum today at Connections charter school in the Kress Building in downtown Hilo. Inouye, Higa, Pilago and others are expected to be there -- but not Kenoi, as I understand it. It's open to the public and starts at 1 p.m. It's right around the corner from my office so I guess that's where I'll take my lunch.
Tucker rips county parks director
Rob Tucker, who moderates the Punaweb Forum and helped found Friends of Puna's Future, tries to effect change by using good information, common sense and persistent moderation in his approach to getting the County to recognize that Puna is not getting the services it should be. But Tucker apparently reached the end of his rope recently, resulting in a scathing critique of Parks and Rec Director Pat Engelhard's performance in Puna, which was published Friday on Punaweb Forum and in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Sunday. It's worth a read if you haven't seen it.
NOAA site maps SO2 activity
Steve Tallman just put this great link in a comment to an earlier post so you may not see it. It's a NOAA site that maps SO2 concentrations and flows of the gas from Kilauea Volcano across Hawaii and the Pacific on a daily basis. The site also has daily SO2 emissions from volcanoes around the world.
Where's the justice, Judge Hara?
David Finley was by all accounts a good guy, a family man with ties to the community and his church. More than 90 people who know him wrote letters asking Judge Glenn Hara to give him probation after his conviction for being a big-time commercial marijuana grower at his Volcano ranch.
Sunday lunch with Sister Rosita
The community is invited to lunch on Sunday with Sister Rosita Aranita, who recently returned to Hawaii from a harrowing experience in Kenya, where she was forced to flee the violent political uprising over disputed elections in the country.
Brain melts under meeting fatigue
A reader e-mailed me to say last night's meeting at the Community Center wasn't what I said it would be and I'm very sorry for the confusion. I think I may have post-traumatic meeting syndrome.
How could I forget Main Street?
Pahoa Main Street Association secretary Chris Scherr e-mailed me on Monday with a reminder about the meeting tonight, April 9, 6-8 p.m. at the Community Center. Then I forgot to include it in the lengthy list of local meetings I published that night. I knew there was one I was forgetting.
The agenda includes discussion of the association's goals for 2008 and ways to support the Pahoa Spring Jamm on May 10. Everyone's invited, friends, neighbors, especially business owners and managers -- anyone who wants to help make Pahoa a better place to live.
Have room for any Volcano evacuees?
Rob Tucker and folks on the PunaWeb forum are offering to provide private accommodations for pets and residents of the Volcano area should they need assistance as a result of being evacuated from the Volcano fumes. It's an great gesture and anyone interested can click here for more info on how you can help.
Rob reorganized the Volcano evacuee posts on the Punaweb Forum resulting in a temporarily bad link. It's now fixed.
Code what? Vog reported worse in Hilo
I'm listening to KHBC 92.7 FM this morning and callers are reporting that Volcano is clear and the vog is worse the closer you get to Hilo, which is the opposite of what Civil Defense is reporting this morning. Mayor Kim in a recording made at 5:30 a.m. is calling a "Code Red," uh, maybe it was "Code Purple," for several areas in the vicinity of the Halemaumau crater and advising people to evacuate to Aunty Sally's in Hilo, where current reports say the air conditions are poor. Auwe! That could just make things worse for anyone suffering respiratory problems. So you're on your own, folks. Stay tuned and use good sense.
