Incinerator plan dead by a vote
The Fifth District's Emily Naeole held her ground against the waste-to-energy incinerator Wednesday while Councilman J Yoshimoto turned in favor of continuing to study the project. But it wasn't enough to change the result and the Wheelabrator project went down with a thud at the Council Council meeting.
OIP answers 12-year old request
In 1996 I asked the state Office of Information Practices for an opinion of the Police Department’s seemingly – at least to me at the time -- arbitrary practice of withholding the names of fatal accident and crime victims until the deceased’s next-of-kin are notified.
Higa lawyers up to fight allegations
All weekend I wrestled with Stacy Higa’s shocking blog post from Friday and finally couldn’t bring myself to sound off again without asking a couple of questions first. Immediately I thought his comments were reprehensible and irresponsible, smearing the victim by innuendo and suggesting her sexual harassment complaints against him are frivolous and politically motivated. Higa wrote:
When people look into this Plaintiff’s history, there will be some startling information. I think that is the reason why the case was sealed. It is very common for people to sue the County for frivolous reasons. They are hoping for easy money during an election year. It won’t happen this time. This claim has no merit, and I am fighting to get this corrected.
Route 130 safety: Still 'no can'
A tip of the hat to Aaron Stene at Kona Blog for this link to an article on roundabouts at HeraldNet, in Everett, Washington.
I've seen state Department of Transportation activity in Puna Makai of late -- lots of vehicle counters and small crews of Honolulu-attired DOT people looking intently at traffic from Pahoa High School to the Keaau bottleneck. But I don't know if it's just for the long-term four-lane project or whether they have immediate improvements on their mind.
Prof says not to question sentencing
UH-Hilo political science prof Rick Castberg wrote an interesting comment (scroll down) on my post noting the apparent lack of justice in two drug case sentences by Circuit Court Judge Glenn Hara.
Safarik running? Jordan a Dem again?
Gary Safarik is leaving open the possibility that he’ll seek to regain the 5th District Council seat that was wrested from him by Emily Naeole in 2006.
Where's the justice, Judge Hara?
David Finley was by all accounts a good guy, a family man with ties to the community and his church. More than 90 people who know him wrote letters asking Judge Glenn Hara to give him probation after his conviction for being a big-time commercial marijuana grower at his Volcano ranch.
What a crock ...
Anyone notice the condescension, hypocrisy and sheer effrontery exhibited by three County Council members from West Hawaii toward the Fifth District last week?
Can you hear me now?

Hawaiian Tel has no cash to invest in system, seeks infusion of fed funds
Aaron Stene at Kona blog wrote a good piece Saturday on Hawaiian Telcom’s bid to get Universal Service Funds to improve its telephone network in Hawaii, and Puna plays a key part in the telephone company's application to the Federal Communications Commission.
