California's med marijuana biz booms

Interesting New York Times technology section story today (not sure why it's under "technology) on the growing medical marijuana business in California, now "a full-fledged industry ... taking in about $2 billion a year and generating $100 million in state sales taxes." But keep reading down for a funny story about a security check gone awry at Japan's Narita Airport. Some unsuspecting traveler was either horrified or elated with what they found in their luggage, depending on their perspective.

FCC to cap rural telecom fund

I came across this article last night, which sounds like bad news for any company counting on the USF  to prop up its bottom line. That includes Hawaiian Tel, serving the majority of telecom consumers in the state, Nextel and Sandwich Isles Communication, which is building an expensive statewide fiber optic network linking Hawaiian Home Lands. SIC and Nextel already get a combined $44 million a year from the USF. Hawaiian Tel is currently applying for $30 over five years because it has no reserves to invest in its telecom network.

Geo potential seen in MIT report

USA Today published a story yesterday about the growing potential of geothermal energy nationwide. It was based on an MIT study but the mainstream media like the nation's largest newspaper still don't publish links to its sources in its online stories, which continues to confound me. Nevertheless I found  it myself which wasn't too difficult but still annoying. (Note that I didn't link to USA Today -- HA! No need -- and the big print media keep wondering why their circulation is down.)
