The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Relay for Life tonight; blog outage tomorrow

I'm about to leave for the all-night Relay for Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society in Hilo. Members of the Hawaii Newspaper Guild take photos of the event and all its participants. So I should be straggling in tomorrow morning and recuperating a while before getting back to blogging. Then at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Squarespace, the host for this blog, promises to shut down for about four hours while installing some new systems. I don't feel real good about that but they didn't consult with me. Be forewarned, there could be problems. A hui hou.

Relay for my health?

Just before the event I ate a seven course menu dinner at the Imiloa. When I arrived at the stadium at 11 pm I was inspired by those running in the rain. My goodness...I was fast like them when I ran track in Hilo high; but now I am 40 lbs heaiver. At least I walked 4 laps and felt very good just for being there with everyone.
Snooze you Lose:
I only saw Ted, Billy, Stacy, Emily, and Lorraine's group were over there walking to fight cancer. I wonder why other candidates aren't there walking with the people? Do You Know Why?
