The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Red hibiscus and a welcome storm cloud

hibiscus3_edited-1.jpgI used flash on the flower in front of dark clouds moving in at dusk last night. The clouds carried a few needed showers but not enough yet to end the recent drought.

My tank's down to less than 15 inches as we juggle the needs of house guests, thirsty plants and kids home for the summer.

But I have a feeling (not to mention a forecast) that says cooler, wetter weather is on the way to stay for a while.

Kona's been raining practically every day, especially where I live in the Holualoa ahupua'a. Maybe the West side is changing from sunny to wet and the east side is changing from wet to sunny?

One of the oddities of Big Island weather is that Kona is the only place in the state where summer's the rainiest. And the envy of all us folks in East Hawaii on catchment. Except for the vog.

I have a party to help with tomorrow!

Best weather in the world rain or shine. Drought or not.
Location, Location, Location, rain/sun 50-50 works for me.
In the meantime 4-5 ponds provide insurance.
If you live up elevation, expect more rain. When I used to live up Ahualoa, it rained everyday during the 'Drought' the El Nino year of 96-97. But here in the middle of the largest shelf on the island at about 150 elevation, pure heaven all year. Pick up a mango off the ground and get hit by two falling off the tree, Abundance.
And my Dane, she just when into heat! yea! puppies!

Fruit year round, growing season year round, spit in the dirt and it grows, 3 hundred year mago worm dirt. My biggest chore it keeping thing from growing TOO much, life is good.

see Utube "mango meat" like 5lbs of meat per evening. Time to go fill another bucket.
Have a Nice Day. :)
