The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Ford snubs Naeole over 'donkey' remark

Aunty Em is feeling sad. Brenda Ford won't take her peace offering. All "Aunty Em" Naeole did was call Ford a "donkey" during a public meeting.

Naeole took a jar of honey to her Council Colleague this week but apparently the gesture wasn't well-received.

Naeole said the donkey remark was just her pidgin' talking, not an insult. "Really, it was meant as a praise," the Fifth District Councilwoman told Kristine Kubat, editor of the Emily-friendly Big Island Weekly.

Alas, as Kubat reports: "Brenda Ford didn't take the honey and  Aunty Emily is feeling sad."

Honest, I'm not making this up. I'd like to link you to the story but the July 9 edition isn't online yet. That's a bad sign. I hope the BIW isn't going to adopt the old Hawaii Island Journal practice of waiting a week to post the current edition. For some reason it was also tough to find a BIW in Hilo on Friday. Artist Tomas Belsky, on the cover, must be really popular. Here's the BIW link you can try just in case.

And even though I have to transcribe the quote from the print edition, here's a pretty remarkable admission from the editor of an alternative newspaper.

"Of course all of this is written at great risk of alienating every last one of the (County Council members) and making them unwilling to ever talk to us again. So here is the feel-good ending that brings all of the above to a poetic close and brings the BIdub in good standing with this very interesting cast of characters."

Kubat then gives Ford a long lecture about getting along.

"If I were writing the script," Kubat concludes, "I'd have Brenda take da honey."

I would take the honey. No sense getting HBP (high blood pressure) over something like that. Furthermore being called just about any animal's name is a compliment since animals have so much better qualities than a human being. jmo.

Maybe Brenda wingum from the mainland or Honolulu. According to Aunty's previous public statements on 5 February 08 her opinion would be of no value to PUNA. Lets see Brenda spent 1K of our money on miscellanious expenditures for food . Aunty was so much more efficient she spent over 14K of our money, I think I'll side with Brenda as to who the more informed and professional PUBLIC SERVANT IS! God Save us in the next election.

Was a public apology offered? It would be/have been a more appropriate gesture.

Thank you Kelipo, I agree 100%. No matter how sad, deppressed, angry I am, at the end off the day I come home to my animals amd their tails are a waggin w/plenty licks/kisses.
I try my best to smile everyday and am saddened by the lack of smiles back (I refuse to quit), I know this is a tough time for all of us (cept da ones w/da money), but a smile is free and makes us feel a little better. Let's us find the true meaning of Aloha again, PLEASE.
