The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Journal meeting missed over agenda snafu

I wanted to hear the discussion of the Hawaii Island Journal's demise but the meeting time announced by Tiffany Hunt when she posted the agenda here was 9:30 a.m. I then wrote a post about the meeting with the time included here.  But the actual time of the meeting was 8:30 a.m., which I found out while walking from my office to the County Building at about 9:25 this morning.

Afterward Hunt said she'd been given an erroneous draft version of the agenda and distributed it thinking it was good but didn't find out herself about the change in meeting times until around 10:30 Monday night, which was still early enough to make an attempt to alert the people already alerted to the bogus meeting time. But no corrective notice was sent.

Former HIJ editor Peter Serafin said he was notified of the change at about 8 p.m. Monday night by a Council watcher who called him about it. Otherwise he would not have made it to the meeting on time and he was supposedly the primary speaker.

Hunt is apologetic about the error, however, and maybe taking it a little too hard. In an e-mail, she wrote:

My credibility is down the drain.
I'm so sorry. It was my fault completely for putting out a draft agenda, mistaking it for the final.

I hardly think Hunt's credibility is shot over this. A mistake was made and she owns up to it. I can accept that. It happens. Next time I just wish we could have had a correction as soon as the error was discovered no matter how late. Oh well.

Unfortunately this is a busy work week for me. I also wanted to make the 2 p.m. planning meeting on the Puna CDP but could not. Was anyone there who could make a report?

Tiff -

Most of us make much bigger mistakes in life.

At least you were trying. I think your still credible.

I seem to make mistakes daily... Glad I'm not in a position like yours, where everything is so highly scrutinized.

Keep plugging away girl!
