The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Council roiling over civic center

Don't miss this story, which includes Councilwoman Emily Naeole flying her pen across the County Council Chambers ("out of hand for a reason"), and Naeole joining J Yoshimoto and Donald Ikeda to block passage of the Kona Civic Palace -- at least temporarily -- with their demand that public hearings be held first. Not a bad idea, either. I'd like to hear someone defend the inclusion of an amphitheater, museum and cafe in the project.

Yes there is too much fluff in the West Hawaii Civic Center. But the council could've placed conditions on the funding for the latter. Which would force DPW to downsize the project.

As it stands now, these three council members quest to torpedo the West Hawaii Civic Center has also torpedoed some important public safety projects like a new Hilo Central Fire Station/Admin Complex and Makalei Fire Station.

A cafe would be leased to a private entity and could be a source of revenue. Nobody needs another crappy museum, I agree, but a public ampitheater/meeting place seems like a normal part of a civic center, and there isn't either one in Kona.

If you folks get to learn the development plans for Kealakehe, you will find that all of the surrounding areas are destined to be developed into a variety of commercial centers. We should let those commercial centers provide the restaurants and cafes and keep the County out of competing with them. No cafe, no library, no museum and reduce the parking lot size. That area is supposed to be TRANSIT ORIENTED. KEEP YOUR CARS AT HOME WHERE THEY BELONG!!!
The amphitheater can be a small one made of concrete benches and located outdoors.
