The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Post outs isle paper as scandalmonger

Ian Lind at iland.net today alerts us to the part of this Washington Post story about  right-wing loony Andrew Walden, publisher of Hawaii Free Press.

Seems Walden now may claim the dishonor of being the first in the nation to publish certain false and malicious rumors about Barack Obama that had been circulating on the Internet by way of an anonymous e-mail chain, according to the Post.

Of course around here discerning readers already know of Walden's tortured relationship with truth. Now it's known nationwide. Walden will probably crow perversely about the notoriety when he should be embarrassed to be exposed as a hack on such a grand scale.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Walden's active in the Republican party. Does the party condone this sort of political thuggery? Or does the GOP like having Walden's newspaper around for this very purpose, spreading smear campaigns?

Tsk-tsk, Andrew. Yellow journalists suck.

Does anyone read Waldon's paper? How can he keep it going? It has practically no advertising. I e-mailed him once to ask him who funded The HFP and he told me that was none of my business.
Note: O Keefe's runs ads in his paper, so don't give them your business. Bread's not good for you anyway.

I have a collection of back issues of the Free Press going back to its debut in January 2005. Of course, my collection has gaps, such as one between May and November 2007. O'Keefe bakery has been a consistent advertiser in the Free Press from its beginning, but in mid-2007 it stopped placing ads in the paper, not because of any boycott or rift with Andrew Walden. It was simply a matter of affordability. How do I know this? O'Keefe is an acquaintance of mine.

Sorry about O'Keefe's. I guess I can go back to buying the occasional baguette.
But that Walden piece Anonymous links to is pathetic. Unreadable. And the site design with Uncle Sam on the pot is ridiculous.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to boycott libertarian jim because
his bakery supports andrew and the Free Press. Advertisers aren't
supposed to have anything to do with editorial content. It is the editor's
call. Okeefe's sammies are just too yummy, and jim's wife is in the Press Club
with me... And Hunter... I don't think Andrew has joined us, though, come to think of it.

Chiming in from the road on the third week of a long trip. Bulletin goofed when editors did nor retain Ian, despite his sharp tone and wit.

As for Walden, the old-consider-the source saw applies here best. The Muslim nonsense is so false it does not deserve reply. What is bad in all this is that Walden tars UH-Hilo that he once attended.
