The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Hawaii shippers fixing fuel surcharges?

Thanks to Aaron Stene at Kona Blog for the link to this CNN Money story about a class-action suit filed against Hawaii's two largest shippers -- Matson and Horizon -- accusing them of conspiring to fix fuel surcharges at levels much higher than their actual costs.

I haven't seen this reported in the local media even though its implications seem huge for Hawall. The two shippers share the entire Hawaii market and probably affect prices on goods in the islands as much as any other factor.

Success by the plaintiffs also likely would raise talk again of repealing the Jones Act, which prevents foreign shippers from competing in the Hawaii market.

Matson and Horizon have very good lawyers, but we can only hope the plaintiffs have a good case AND competent legal representation. As for repealing the Jone Act, don't hold your breath. Our two rapidly fossilizing U.S. Senators are wedded to the concept that everyone in Hawaii should pay more than necessary for shipped goods in order that their cronies can continue to reap big profits and big paychecks. It's so refreshing to see some Democrats break out of the stereotype and favor the good of the few over the good of the many.

The Honolulu dailies have covered this story in the business sections recently. As did Pacific Business News, I believe.

No, I don't have the links, sorry.

Right on the mark Jerry! So lets vote for them Again. Lets not give a younger Candidate a chance. Hmmm Ed Case was in PUNA every quarter. We couldn't have someone who was actually concerned, and conscious replace a fossil. He was actually treated as a party traitor for doing what was right. We are getting what we deserve.
