The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal
I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger. Puna has been my family's home since 1993.
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 07:46PM I want to call everyone's attention again to the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life this year on July 19-20.
I know last year a similar post set off a long and spirited debate on corporate-versus-alternative medicine and I don't mind if that occurs again.
I just know that the medical industry that ACS supports has helped many people I know survive cancer, and has helped others I know lead better lives with cancer, so I support ACS and encourage others to support it as well.
Visit my Relay for Life Web site and see how you can help.

"New research, for example, shows that certain classes of chemotherapy drugs are so dangerous to human health that they cause heart failure in many women who use them. The drugs are called anthracyclines, and the research was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (October, 2007)."
"In 1992, in conjunction with the NCI, the ACS aggressively launched a " chemoprevention" program aimed at recruiting 16,000 healthy women at supposedly " high risk" of breast cancer into a 5-year clinical trial with a highly profitable drug called tamoxifen. This drug is manufactured by one of the world's most powerful cancer drug industries, Zeneca, an offshoot of the Imperial Chemical Industries. The women were told that the drug was essentially harmless, and that it could reduce their risk of breast cancer. What the women were not told was that tamoxifen had already been shown to be a highly potent liver carcinogen in rodent tests, and also that it was well-known to induce human uterine cancer (6, pp. 145– 151)."

When you "fight" cancer, you want to make sure that you truly understand what you are "fighting" for because "fighting for the cure" AINT GONNA WORK when they're dumping carcinogens like aspartame in our food supply.

The "true fight" is not about "finding the cure" but rather about fighting against big businesses like the ACS and the FDA who promote policies that allow corporations to poison our environment and our food supply.

"Gone is the once ever-present can of Diet Coke. These days he downs protein drinks, trying to build back some of the weight he lost. He carries a little bottle of lidocaine, which he sips to numb the pain."
