The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Inouye supporters turn out in Hilo

A sea of yellow-shirted Lorraine Inouye for Mayor supporters flooded Auntie Sally's Luau House Thursday for Lorraine Inouye's Birthday Bash. People were wall-to-wall  inside and more were outside on the lanai. Maybe 800 in all.

But that just made the food lines long. At least the speeches were short.

Sen. Inouye was to the point in prepared remarks, emphasizing again her experience in county and state government and ability to continue working through her connections in Honolulu for the benefit of Hawaii County.

She was introduced by state Sen. (President Emeritus) Robert Bunda, her friend from the North Shore-Wahiawa district on Oahu. And while I suppose they would have had an actual Hawaii County voter introduce her, I think they were all busy either waiting in line or eating at the time. I know I was.

Inouye seems to be hitting her stride after the campaign lagged from a long, busy schedule of Legislative duties.

And, she actually will not make 68 until Sunday. Happy Birthday Lorraine!

I was impressed that Sen Loraine Inouye was there from the beginning, greeting eveyone as they arrived. I really don't like the better-than-thou attitude of making a Grand Entrance that so many Politicans favor.
Wish we could've stayed for the speeches. However, we had a grandson depending on us to be there for him.
I can read about the issues. I hope to meet all the candidates and watch how they treat others. Their attitudes are as important to me as nearly anything else.
Lorraine made a very positive impression.

I think Lorraine was one of the hotel managers when I worked at the Orchid Island Hotel as a waitress in the 70s. Even at 68, she's still the best looking candidate running for mayor so far. Good for her.
