All candidates having campaign events in Puna are invited to submit information for publication in this column.

The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

What's next for alternative isle news?

If I'm not around tomorrow you know I'm home worried stiff that my slippers and shower curtain are trying to kill me. More evidence here and here.

So it seems the news media's annual late summer slow-down and silly season is starting earlier than usual this year. Think it's Rupert Murdoch's fault? Herman Frazier's?

Larry Geller's Disappeared News, however, is often the perfect tonic for the summer news doldrums. Larry weighed in here Saturday on the loss of the Hawaii Isle Journal . And Ian Lind heard from Publisher Laurie Carlson about her decision to close the alternative newspaper, while Jim Albertini cuts to the chase with his comments, calling for "rich, liberal investors" to fill the gap.

Meanwhile I've heard a lot of talk in the past few days about either reviving the Journal or starting a new publication and even talk of some money. Seems like the dim prospect of a Stephens Media-owned media monopoly on Hawaii Island (unless you count the Hawaii Free Press ) could start shaking some trees.

I'm with braddah Jim Albertini on this one... sort of.

Karl Marx is the greatest of all 'Liberals', as Jim and too many other well-meaning folks use the term (which excludes the Liberal Party in Australia).
: the source of all wealth is labor, often taken to mean "The People", and that would be us; all of us (or darned near).

How would it be to have community ownership of a media 'business'? including community radio? print, electronic, ... what else?
It suits my own taste better than charity from 'rich liberal investors'

-- ps, Jim: had some of your sweet corn the other night -- delicious. love ya ;)

I'm down for writing... I have a little experience and a lot of heart.

James, community ownership of a business? like the department of water supply?
While the dissemination of news is very important role in a free society, it seems to me that any community ownership outside a corporation -a dirty word to many- is inviting big trouble. IMHO, what's needed may not be community ownership, or one liberal fat cat, but a hui of dedicated individuals, willing to risk a whole lot of money, for the common good. Maybe a non-profit corporation, like many of our businesses (unintentionally) are.

"community" ownership does not at all equate "government" ownership.
Fore example, a co-operative is owned by people in that community -- and there are other for- and not-for-profit types of organizations.
Yeah, a hui.
Know not much about journalism and publishing and such like, and the numbers ("risk a whole lot of money") are unknown to me. However, my intuition tells me it's the people doing the work more than the money required to get community-owned media live.

Perhaps the Green Bay Packers could serve as a model for operating a community newspaper:

Utterances:
...would anyone like to have a better ISP?
...would anyone like to read the news without the ads and other senselessly dead trees?
...I would like local and global music, art and literature; local and global news; local talk story and global discourse; web access, that is, communications...
...can anyone say 'subscription'?

Surely, Rupert Murdoch and ilk have not had the last word...so to speak.
There must be a better way.

My observation is that Rupert Murdoch's domination of media is only possible because he and his huge network of franchises have prioritized their core business, which is advertising. In the Murdoch model, it appears - If advertisers are willing to sponsor the production of legitimate news, it would take precedence over the fashion and travel features, but until that happens, the 'news' will feature plenty of headlines about news pointing to things people can buy.

Karl Marx a liberal. The man had no clue as to human nature. he died like the sick waste he was. Every time humanity has tried the Great Utopian Socialist Experiment human nature took over. 28 million plus dead in Russia alone. 6-8 million dead in Germany
Who knows in North Korea and East Germany, Poland, Even if you count our war dead. The dead we killed in every war we aren't close in the amount of human destruction Some are leaders and most are followers. The Republic is the only real hope. Appeal to mans best nature and set high goals. Hope for the best. Pray for the Best. Work for the best. Motivation not dictation by government has worked better in America. Jim can thank God he lives in such a horrible country. You can burn a flag tell the leadership to go to hell, protest at the Federal building everyday, and no one stops you. Try that in a Marxist country.
