I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Prisons hearing today, Kamehameha Day

Anyone else think it odd that the state Public Safety Department would hold a public hearing on a state holiday?

I admit that any advance notice of this one passed me by until Dave Smith tipped me to this article in today's Honolulu Advertiser about tonight's hearing in Hilo on the PSD's plan to expand prisons at Kulani, Hale Nani and Hawaii Community Correction Center in East Hawaii. According to the PSD informational brochure, the agency would house hundreds of prisoners in temporary tent-like structures to ease crowding and reduce the number of inmates sent to mainland prisons. The info brochure doesn't say how much temporary tents cost, but it does say that the tent materials will be stored at the prisons and jails until more money is available to actually construct them.

Did anyone else know this hearing was happening tonight? I wonder how many people they expect will attend on Kamehameha Day. It starts at 5 p.m. at the Aupuni Center Conference Room.

I'm reading this after 5:00 p.m. Well, I'm fed up with the prison system which I worked in for ten years. I don't care what they do any more. Let them build a mega super prison here. They can provide lots of construction jobs and big profits for companies, privatize it and have plenty of room to incarcerate all of us.
We're just a third world country anyhow with cheap WalMart stuff and stupid TV entertainment and big stupid cars and trucks. Nobody wants to think any more or do the hard stuff. So let the good times roll until they come to lock us away.
