Campaign events

All candidates having campaign events in Puna are invited to submit information for publication in this column.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Candidate Kale Gumapac weighs in

Fifth District Council candidate Kale Gumapac sent the following comment today to my May 10 post, "Five Council Races to Watch":

Recently there were some disparaging remarks made about myself. This being the political season I can understand other candidates may have over zealous followers.  As you may agree almost all candidates at one time or another have people making statements that are half truths or simply implying something negative about a candidate that is based on hearsay.

Since the rest of it was a long campaign statement about himself, I put it here in the "Press releases" section on the left side of the page instead of leaving it buried in the comments under the older post where you might miss it.

Gumapac joins retired teacher Wayne "Big Dog" Joseph and Kaniu Stocksdale, who finished fifth among five candidates for the seat in the 2006 primary, in challenging one-term incumbent Emily Naeole.

Also listed on the state Elections Commission Web site as taking out papers for the seat is Roberta Banks, but in fact Gumapac announced at the Angel Pilago campaign event in Keaau in March that Banks would not be running due to health reasons.

Former Councilman Gary Safarik, who was ousted by Naeole in 2006, has also indicated he may enter the non-partisan race before the July 22 filing deadline.
