I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Would Hirono speak out against threat?

Our U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono will be at Pahoa High and Intermediate School from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, for a public meet-and-greet.

The Democratic Congresswoman from Honolulu is running for re-election this fall following her first term in Washington, D.C.

Perennial candidate Roger Evans of Keaau also is running for the 2nd Congressional District office but on the Republican side, according to the most recent list from the Hawaii state elections office.

You think maybe Mazie's the one to see about doing something to prevent federal pot police from swooping in on choppers to arrest and imprison our medical marijuana patients?

Don't think that could happen? This is from today's Hawaii Tribune-Herald:

(Councilman Stacy) Higa said he's worried about the federal government taking over the (marijuana eradication) program, which police have said will likely happen if they don't run it.

On KHBC radio with Mynah Bird this morning, Higa warned that if the DEA moves in medical marijuana permits won't be worth the blue paper they're printed on. Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna and a DEA spokesman also warned of the dire consequences that rejecting this grant could bring to Hawaii County. In March I called that bullying and called on the Council to stand up and resist it.

They did, finally, to their credit. But now we need to fear the feds.

What a lousy threat to hang over the island.

what a screwed up one sided war. they fly.. they steal.. they arrest.. and nobody fights back! I wonder when that will change?

Again, I doubt the DEA has been sitting on its hands here. It has two helicopters stationed at the Hilo airport and the budget for those is not likely to be tied in any way to the county.

Manpower might be another issue, so it would be interesting to know exactly what interaction there is already between the feds and county police, such as whether additional funding is needed for their assistance. Another issue is the involvement of DOCARE officers and National Guard troops, both of whom have had involvement in Green Harvest in the past.

Ah, now it all fits together. They really want to destroy the waiwi so that the forest gets thinned out and the feds and county can find the pakalolo better. What a bunch of jerks. I hope you folks wrote in your testimony against killing the waiwi. Today was the deadline.

There is a rather large Ad in the HTH about this meeting. Of course, it ISN"T a campaign stop, but a VISIT from our Congresswomen. You can tell, because the ad doesn't say "Paid for by .....". My question, where wes she last year when she wasn't running for re-election? Did she come by for a Talk Story then? I honestly don't remember. Ed Case made these meetings every year, usually more than just once a year. This is one way the incumbent has a duty to be honest about the reasons for a visit. Campaign money, not tax money should be paying for these ads.
We do need our elected officials to be more accessible to the public, make more visits to our communities. But, if it's a campaign stop, keep it honest.I hope whoever wins their elections, they come around to talk story more than just during the election cycle..
Don't mean to pick on our Congresswoman. I'm just using this incident to point out a pratice used by elected officials at all levels, of all parties.
I won't be available for this meeting, so I'm hoping to get a good bit of info on this blog. Especially knowing there will be alot of different views.

Kim,
Your sentiment re the Congresswoman being an election-year friend to Puna is not unfounded.
Able to be there?
...2pm on a weekday? at school, at dismissal time?
Indeed, it would seem better could be done.

At least. Hunter's direction is relevant __ unlike so many others who would have the county involved in federal and state matters while leaving the home front unattended.

they can't solve solid waste or police car issues but they can readily jump in on federal military and GMO matters that maybe even Lingle may be unable to deal with. (But I forget she is in the Middel East mucking around on international matters).

Jeez, as kids we used to get time out when we ventured out of bounds too often.

Under the aegis of the War on Drugs, Americans lost most of their civil liberties. It is in fact a war on the working class, the only ones to whom this law is applied. Cindy McCain, had she been poor, would be behind bars for twenty years for the number of illegal prescriptions she had her docs write in her employee's names.

It is no wonder law enforcement love the war on drugs- for them it is a license to steal. As in the 30's, prohibition of a commonly used recreational substance has led to more gangsterism and corruption.

The helicopters fly over my home at least twenty times a day, it is worse when some are drug copters, then they swoop low over the trees around the property. I work at home, so the effect is similar to be being in a war zone. Which, sadly, it really is. Our federal government has declared war on its own citizens.

The majority of Americans now prefer safe access to medical marijuana, probably the safest of all drugs. Please donate what you can to MPP, NORML, SSDP and other groups working to reform our unjust drug laws.

"unlike so many others who would have the county involved in federal and state matters while leaving the home front unattended."Hugh Clark

Hey Hugh, the council members I know..work their tails off night and day, at their jobs, on top of having to campaign AND grub for the money to do so. Yes, they are plenty busy. The reason they are, as you say, sticking their noses where they don't belong is because residents are DEMANDING that they do. On issues such as depleted uranium radiation and other military contamination, GMO's, etc., residents are mostly talking to the brick wall of the powers that be. The county is closest to them and the most responsive, and likely their only line of defense against these very important issues, I doubt county officials would be looking for MORE work if it weren't for the fact that so many residents are begging them to get involved in such things. The county is mandated to look out for the people and the island....the whole island.
If the Feds were proposing a plutonium processing plant as your neighbor would you sit quietly on your property line, and watch them build it? No, I didn't think so....

Hey konaside, why not identify yourself so we can see if you have a conflict of interest.

And if a plutonium plant was going to be built nearby the LAST type of help I would seek would be a non-binding council resolution.

Harry Kim (and the incoming mayor) MUST do the right thing and stand up for the people of the Big island. Don't just sit on the side and act like "there's nothing we can do" if the Feds begin flying missions that the people (and county council) rejected. The federal involvement in this just does not add up, given the national deficit and wars in the middle east.

As for our state officials, the DLNR.....their jurisdiction is the state forests and open spaces. As we all know, not much growing is taking place in the forest anymore. The forest is too hard to grow. The rain kills you and the soil is not good. Most main growers are taking it into their garages, spare rooms and basements. helicopters do not find these folks. Detective work does.

For any of you guys growing big time crops.....FU*K You! Your money hungry a$$es are making it hard for the rest of us who just trying to grow a few plants. I hope you get busted.

If there are no plants to be found in the forest, the DLNR also has a green light to fly over our neighborhoods. Isn't that crazy? Well, it is true. Don't think for a moment that we are off the hook with the county not getting the funds. The state still provides money to these programs.

I just read an article in the trib recently about US Marines in southern Afghanistan "walking by and leaving alone" acres and acres of poppies used to make heroin. The reason? It is the way of life for the people and farmers depend on the money being made. Get this, our own U.S. government allows for poppies to be grown for Heroin, and has the gumption/gall to fly federal missions of our island. How f*ckin' crazy is that?
