Meetings and more meetings ...

If you like meetings, you'll love April.

First, Tuesday night, April 8, County folks will be at Pahoa Community Center discussing the proposed waste-to-energy incinerator project in an information session format. That's good because I'd really like to see that part of the County's Powerpoint that shows all the various waste management options and their projected costs.

As I recall from the Hilo hearing last week, the most expensive of them all is the WTE incinerator. Yet it will  burn only 35 percent of the rubbish and won't eliminate the need to ship rubbish by truck(s) to Kona. Why are we still seriously talking about this proposal?  Maybe it's the hard-sell that sent Fightin' Dom Yagong over the edge on Sunday.

On Thursday, April 10, 5:30 p.m., at the Pahoa Community Center, the Puna Community Medical Center planners led by Dan Domizio will be talking about the fast-developing plans for an urgent care center at the Pahoa Marketplace. They are continuing to raise funds and hoping the County will soon kick in a sizeable portion of what's needed to get up and running. This is truly one project that everybody should get behind.

And though this one isn't a meeting, it's a good way to help support the urgent care center. There will be a benefit concert "Women's Comedy Night" on Friday, April 25, 7 p.m. at the Akebono Theatre in Pahoa. Tickets are $10 ($12 at the door) and can be purchased at the Puna Pharmacy (Puna Marketplace), Sirius Coffee, Keaau Natural Foods, or via Paypal to comedynight@punahealth.org.(your ticket will held in your name at the theatre box office on the night of the event).

The Hawaii County Council will make a rare appearance in Pahoa at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, for another in its series of formal public hearings on the proposed WTE incinerator. Thank Councilwoman Emily Naeole for bringing this one to Pahoa. If you have an opinion on the incinerator, here's your chance to voice it where it might matter.

On Thursday, April 17, 5:30 p.m. at the Keaau Community Center, the Hawaii Department of Transportation will host an open house to discuss plans for Route 130.  I know, I know, they just like to tease us with these things only to blow us off later. But maybe, just maybe, if enough people keep showing up to bug them about what we really need,  eventually the light may go on.

On Thursday, April 30, 6-8 p.m., County Councilman Angel Pilago will bring his mayoral campaign back to Puna with a talk-story stop at Pahoa High School. Maybe this time he'll be better versed about Puna's problems.

Finally, the last of this month's Puna Community Development Plan open house sessions will be held Saturday, April 12, 1-4 p.m. at the Pahoa High School cafeteria, and on Sunday, April 13, 1-4 p.m. at the Hawaiian Paradise Park Community Center.

Now I still feel like I've forgotten something. If so, let me know.
