The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Waste in Seattle, DU, a correction

I had to put the blog on hiatus yesterday in the interest of work, and while I've still got much to do I'll drop a few items in here while I have a spare moment.

One is this item from Seattle where the city is considering a 20-cent tax on grocery bags. Bring your own bag or pay 20 cents -- paper or plastic -- at the cash register. They did this in Germany when I was there a couple of years ago.

Seattle also is considering a ban on Styrofoam containers and cups as suitable replacements made of compostable plastics are available.

Shouldn't we be doing these kinds of things here?

With all the talk about loan guarantees and other financial help for airlines, has anybody heard any mention of fare regulations? Is there any doubt that the price of a ticket will rise to their former levels now that Go! has achieved its goal? If we help the remaining airlines stay in business, maybe we also ought to keep travel affordable on our inter-island "highways."

Meanwhile, Hugh Clark e-mailed to comment on the state Health Department's reliance on the U.S. mail to protect us from depleted uranium. He added:

While I am neither a garbage to energy freak out nor concerned deeply by depleted uranium concerns, I slapped my head a time or two today after reading Yager's piece on testing stopping because of Department of Health equipment failure. "It'll all depend on how long the mail takes," said Russell Takata.

Now take the DOH and the postal service that has been known to misplace things for decades and you have a perfect formula for incompetent inaction forever.

Finally, mahalos to Peter S who e-mailed to correct me on the the employers of new reporters Daniel Brock and Cameron Johnson. Brock works for West Hawaii Today and Johnson for Hawaii Tribune-Herald. My apologies to both.

Just a note...
Tonight was the Voter Registrar class in Pahoa. !4 people attended, (though, 1, Fred Blas cannot be a Registrar because he is a candidate). Good showing for Pahoa.
The crew giving the class was terrific. If a group of 10 or more wants to get another class together, just call the elections office and work with them.
We do have an elections office now in Pahoa at the Malama Market area. We will be able to do our walk in early voting right there (if the info tonight holds true)! Is this finally someone noticing Pahoa? I sure hope so!

"... tax on grocery bags ... ban on Styrofoam containers and cups ...Shouldn't we be doing these kinds of things here?"
Yes, we should be.
No, we are not.
Why? Well, now there is a question.

btw: actually "polystyrene" is the generic term for that nasty stuff; "Styrofoam" is a tradmark name of a Dupont product that is made of polystyrene.
