Kim eyes WTE cap on Kilauea

Unbelievably, I heard it on good authority today that Mayor Harry Kim is working with volcano experts and solid waste researchers on a hush-hush plan to use leftover ash from the proposed waste-to-energy plant to cap the volcano.

Wheelabrator officials claim the wet by-product of incineration actually will dry harder than concrete and can plug the fume-spewing vent at Halemaumau and anywhere else the nasty gas starts leaking from the earth.

Mayor Kim especially likes the idea because it would eliminate the need to truck the ash to West Hawaii, not to mention the potential problem of having to evacuate all those people from the national park and surrounding communities.

Whaddya think? Good idea? Well, if you've gone this far with it, check your calendar.

You've just been April Fooled!

Enjoy the rest of your day.

If my information is correct...

When tha lava was flowing out of Mauna Loa in 1984 the fountain and glow could be seen from 200 miles out at sea as well as from under the (mayors desk). The lava was flowing down towards Hilo and came with in one mile of a home.It was flowing fast and it was not slowing down.) The military provided a dozen big bombs directly into the vent and it was sealed.
Today a visitor to the summit of Mauna Loa can see a three mile 50 foot tall berm or break wall encircling the NOAS scientific buildings and the odd mega ton boulder displaced miles from the vent is evidence of the massive explosions the dropped bombs caused.

Just Fools?

Come on guys, this was suggested by Corky in a Star-Bulletin cartoon last month. Corky has more insight on the Big Island than most of us.

I think the government can save lots of money ($125.5 million) by dumping trash directly into the volcano, or at least a skylight in a lava tube. Because that would make it a natural incinerator, and we all know that anything natural is good for you.

I heard they were thinking of sacrificing virgins to Pele to stop the eruption, but they couldn't find any.
