The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

So many issues, so little time

Puna's state legislators and most of the entire Big Island delegation will be in Puna Saturday seeking input on proposed legislation and other issues on your mind, so it's a terrific opportunity to implore them to pay more attention to the growing needs of the state's fastest-growing district and to make a big, positive showing on Puna's behalf.

Off the top of my head I could think of a few issues, the first being dangerous conditions on State Route 130. (Just last night I saw three ambulances carrying people away from a head-on wreck at the Makuu Drive intersection.) You probably have your own issues to address; just make sure you show up to address them. But talk fast because the legislators are making several stops with only an hour at each location and not much time between stops.

The schedule, which is different than what was published here previously from the newspaper, starts at UH-Hilo at 7:30 a.m.; then the legislators are expected to be at Keaau Elementary School cafeteria, 9-10 a.m., Pahoa High School cafeteria, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and at Volcano's Cooper Center, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

The schedule seems a little impractical so try to be patient. At least they're showing up here with the intent to listen, and that's a good thing. Take advantage of it.

Thanks for the reminder.

Certainly, you are right about Hwy 130 as urgent.

Proposal: Executive Directive by the Governor, emergency on Pahoa-Keaau Road. Expedite: (1) safe intersections; and (2) law enforcement re speeding, agressive driving, illegal passing, etc (e.g., a certain orange and yellow helicopter on patrol, above and along Pahoa-Keaau Road M-F 6:00am - 9:00am, and 3pm - 7pm, and other times).

Hunter, on your recent post and follow up about MacKenzie Park, I made the morbid suggestion that a photo of a crash on Hwy 130 would perhaps get the necessary attention it deserves.
Did you have your camera with you last evening at Makuu? ...at what time? Makuu is my 'hood...

I was driving home from Hilo and saw the ambulances racing in the opposite direction near Keaau. By the time I got to the scene there was not much drama left to it except for a pickup truck in the road with its front end pretty well smashed in. I just rubbernecked it and moved on. No pics.

Brian Jordan,

Regarding Emily giving County $$ to "Laupahoehoe" and "Keaukaha," "she" [County Council] gave $$ to organizations. I'm going down to Puna CC this am to help "them" prepare their canoes for this coming season, because they asked. We'll be spending some of your big bucks on Puna's canoes. NOT. I'm spending some of your time working on Puna's canoes. NOT. I and a few others support people who are doing physical work for "Puna" while others meet.

Be a girl/boy scout leader, volunteer at the schools. Do something with your name on it. We get well meaning people moving in all the time, and also well meaning people from here; meetings till 2 am. I stopped doing that 30 years ago becaues I found I was giving equal time to everybody, including those who were wasting my time. Do something constructive so you can get credit when credit is due you.

I was here when Helene Hale was the supervisor of the then council. She helped put in the sewer line in Keaukaha. It had its pros and cons. I was against it because I lived by the smell source. The good thing was it reduced, but hasn't eliminated, the pollutants going into the ocean along the entire Keaukaha coast. Next we moved the sewer to behind the airport. That was a good thing because it reduced the smell. The point is that while she is not perfect, Helene did something. Do something.

Suggestion. A mandatory septic tank system requirement for all homes, new and old, in the Vacationland and Kapoho Beach Lots subdivisions. You get that done, you be the man! Those residents don't need to look at the tourists coming down, they need to look at each other. V'land's first houses went down over 40 years ago. Back then if you dug and could find anything that would take the opala away, you were happy. Times have changed, Populations have grown, everybody has rights and responsibilities. I'm for Emily getting toilets down there. We all have a right to the ocean. Beaches are public places. State v. Hall. Shorelines are public places when we're talking below the median high water mark. You start heading that way, and you've got a fan.

Dear Gerard,
You can always be counted on to be hostile and short on facts. I tried to donate Park Equipment $50,000 worth and was turned down. The last Councilman was in power. He thought it was a good idea and a Park official shot it down (liability) insurance. I tried to give uniforms to Pahoa HS. and they wouldn't even return my call.Instead they took used uniforms from another school. So I have given a scholarship in New York a state I have never lived in, but who accepts those who wing in from other states to help. Also I was part of the Team that formed Pahoa Weed & Seed. I Taught, and helped build and paint bus stops in our community. I've picked up trash painted curbs, and eradicated foreign species. I've designed housing for the poor and again the County of Hawaii and the State have showed no interest. So I'll probably build it in another state or country. I could probably build a slow leach cinderblock block water filtration system with prisoners near Champagne Ponds but try and get a permit, and EIS , and EA...... I designed one for the Chinese and they are going to probably use it. Funny the Commies in China are easier to deal with then our own County government I patrolled for neighborhood watch for one year every weeek in Hawaiian Beaches and Shores and one year in Pahoa, The one thing I haven't done is steal or lie. I try and judge someone by their acts. So you know how I feel about you . Perhaps Mr. Roehrigs example will rub off, but I doubt it I was chosen by the Puna News because of expertise. I have filed 3 CSC reports with no discernable mistakes, actually I caught one and paid the fine eventhough it had not noted or requeste. WHY? Because rules matter!. My reports were filed on time and I believe the Campaign Spending Commission will verify these facts as they are a matter of public record... However since your accusation at CSC, I have given serious thought to running for your clients position. Perhaps it is time for someone who winged in here from Honolulu or the mainland to take a shot at passing significant laws. Not like Bill 224 which bans smoking (a legal habit) Not raiding the Bill 225 PGV fund that Bob Jacobson says is 1/10 the size needed is a real emergency comes along. Oh but some of the Council members and the person testifying for Bill 225 received their money already, so that made it OK.. Send me your email and I'll send you a bio of my community aervice, not to mention 20 yrs. in the Marines. Where if a leader lies or steals they are fired and jailed. bfjordan@cuhawaii.net

Brian,

My fax is 961-3998.

I have reasons for commenting as I do. I don't mind sharing them publicly, Recall what I said about the people attending the CSC hearing - political opponents of Emily? You denied my insinuation in a earlier blog post, but here you are telling us that you're thinking about running for Emily's seat. I think that qualifies you as a political opponent, don't you? I am skeptical that this is a new idea of yours, given your political track record. Whether or not you'd be successful, as I told another friend earlier today, I judge people by the company they keep, their actions, and not their words. I have an extremely low tolerance, given Barbara Hale's altered check and the misspelled last name on both the check and the check stub. These people wasted my community service time. Barbara spelled Emily's name correctly on the "pay to" line, but Emily's name was misspelled on the "memo" line, and on the pay stub, yet she insists those are all her entries even though the handwritings look different and used a different pen. Remember, an expert examined the check. The misspellings are obvious if you take a magnifying glass to the "check" and the "check stub."

You're wondering, why the "negativity?" I recall you coming into the CSC hearing room and chumming up to Barbara Hale. And I recall your blogs from last year on the subject of the CSC and the Ethics Commn. Your position was similar to Barbara Hale's. I have a difficult time seeing anything positive when the altered check was a deliberate attempt to alter the process. As was the Tim Gardner attempt. Also, Emily's violations were traced to Barbara's conduct. Didn't you hear the CSC members' discussion? So before I give any of Barbara's friends the benefit of the doubt, I'm still figuring out who helped her misspell Emily's last name, or perhaps gave her ideas about the other allegations she made that were based on her [B Hale's] own conduct. You got any ideas on who that might be, Brian?

Dear Gerard,
I had not entertained the thought until you opened your mouth. Reminds me of that prayer be careful what you ask for you might get it. I've served my community and I have many friends. Now two ofthem are fighting. It's their problem I have enough of my own. If you want to be friendly fine , if not carry on brother. Fax #, NO Email? Esquire please feel free to call me I'm in the book the only B Jordan in Pahoa.
