The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal
I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger. Puna has been my family's home since 1993.
Friday, February 29, 2008 at 08:12AM This morning Mynah Bird reported on the radio that deputy voter registration classes are scheduled again, so congrats to Bill Eger for getting that done.
The valuable voter registration program was suspended Jan. 1, ostensibly over concerns of possible identify theft. Just this week Eger, who spearheaded the protest, received more written lip service from state elections chief Kevin Cronin saying the reason for concern was not identity theft but voter fraud. Eger pointed out that there has been no reported problem with that either. If interested, you can read excerpts from the spirited Eger-Cronin e-mail exchange here.
While it's a good thing to get the DVR program back, albeit a little late this election year, the underlying question of whether the County Clerk and Council Chairman overstepped their bounds by discontinuing the program apparently is unresolved. Hawaii County was the only county to suspend the program.
For questions on deputy voter registration, call the county Elections Division, 961-8277.
