The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Crowds flock to Democratic caucus

demcaucus1.jpgdemcaucus3.jpgUnprecedented numbers of people turned out Tuesday for the Democratic Presidential caucus at the Pahoa Community Center where the state's 4th House District residents made their preferences known.

Barack Obama's candidacy clearly energized the crowd and party leaders were walking around saying how exciting it all is amid the buzz that earlier in the day the Hawaii-born Obama had won the Wisconsin primary campaign over rival Hillary Clinton.

Traffic into Pahoa was bumper-to-bumper and crawling along at 6:30 p.m. and long, thick lines for voter registration snaked out of the community center toward the street. Councilwoman Emily Naeole said the number of people appeared much larger than when she had 900 people out for one of her fund raisers at the Community Center.demcaucus4.jpg

One wag said the last time this many Punatics were all in once place was probably at Haight-Ashbury.demcaucus2.jpgdemcaucus5.jpg

One thing this all shows is that Puna is all spread out and has virtually no public transportation.
It also looks, from the pix, as if virtually all the voters were Hauli. Which was also pretty much the case in my precinct.

And what, pray tell, is a "Hauli?" A German form of rabbit?

Maybe a "Hauli" is a member of a cargo cult or an afficionado of rental trailers. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I appreciate your postings and hope that you will give some particular notice to the important race for Board of Education. It is often overlooked by most voters until the hit the booths and then it is usually too late to make informed decisions. Check out my site and let me know your concerns if I haven't already covered the majority of them. Thanks again. PAUL
