I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Pohoiki park opening announced

pohoikicoast.jpg  < A quiet morning

Another big event for Puna announced this week is the official opening of the long-awaited improvements at the Pohoiki coastline county recreational area.

A blessing and pā‘ina celebrating the first phase of park improvements is slated for 10 a.m. February 9. Kua Ka Lā Public Charter School will be helping with the imu, and providing the tents, tables and chairs, along with giving the opening chant and blessing the food.

Mayor Harry Kim , C ouncilwoman Naeole , and Parks and Recreation Director Engelhard are expected to say a few words at the February 9 event. Representatives from the Isaac Hale family have been extended an invitation. The public is invited to share in the festivities.

The construction barricades, orange cones and yellow tape all should be removed this weekend, according to the 5th District office press release.

Elsewhere in the release is interesting praise for the work that Councilwoman Emily Naeole's predecessor, Gary Safarik, did in helping to develop the park, which is valid and gracious but surprising in that I've never heard Naeole talk like that about her former opponent. She repeated it on KHBC's Mynah Bird show today and added that she always supported Gary. Huh?

Anyway, I wonder whether the County will pass up the opportunity to put a new name on Pohoiki now that it's so well invested in the park. Well, funny I would bring that up because I have a suggestion. Why not rename it the new Harry K. Brown Park at Pohoiki?

Hunter, why you always gotta try subtle snicker anything, this time its Aunty Em when she trying to give credit to Gary, he deserving of recognition in making the new park happen. Everybody get some good in them, even you. But you always feel you gotta stir up the pot. Try relaxing for a change. Let Em and Gary enjoy the fruits of their labor. Make the new Park blessing a happening for all Puna, Safarik and Emily supporters alike. Back off.

Improvements? Is that what's it called when they bulldoze and acre of jungle to pave a parking lot?
Restrict tailgate parking like we was all used to?
When they begin charging for the parking that will be an improvement too yea?
Sometimes it's best to leave things alone.
Funny the picture shows none of the concrete or asphalt or barriers?

"Acre of jungle"? They didn't buldoze anything that wasn't previously cleared. It was full of invasive grasses, weeds and trees that threaten the remaining native plants.

I'm not for needless bulldozing, or clearing old growth natve forest, but what they've done at Pohoiki is great.
Left untouched, it would soon be albezia and other junk stuff.

Thanks Emily and Gary and Harry, and yes, even you Pat.

I don't think Isaac Hale's family would appreciate renaming the park... They are asking us to introduce legislation adding his middle name... Sorry, Hunter, I really don't think it would be appropriate to disrespect Mr. Hale like that.

Proposed is the "Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale Memorial Park."
January 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTiff
they may have had albizias and other brush, but it looked a lot better before, it was more natural.
Oh but the asphalt looks better, you're right.

The sidewalks where we used to be able to park in under the tress is cut off, looks more like a walk you'd find near a resort, with showers, (that I'll bet anyone won't last very long) and of course some day they will charge to park in that lot.

But hey it will go well with the new hotel they're gonna build down there too, right?

KEEPING PUNA RURAL

doesn't mean paving new areas.

Gee Peter, They took an abandoned papaya field with decades of weeds and broken glass and built the first park lower Puna has seen in what, 40-50 years?

They've got safe parking where there's less danger of children running out in front of boneheads in one ton trucks.

They've installed new restrooms and showers to replace the portapotties and hosepipes that have been there for years.

There will soon be county lifeguards at the site for the safety of all.

They've landscaped the area with lovely walkways, picnic tables, open green space, native trees, and did I forget to mention, safe parking?

That damned County. They really screwed up Pohoiki this time. I guess you won't be hanging around. Too bad.

My family and I enjoy the new improvements to Pohoiki. I can't wait for the County to have a spot for Campers. Great job everyone involve.
February 2, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterpuna girl
the park plans to include basketball, vollyball, possibly another skatepark, a keiki pond... i know the weeds everyone went to crap in were nice but...just pretend you're a kid living in puna, why this might be great for them...if we all take care of it, repsect the efforts, make use of the results...it can be a positive thing. kids in puna need more places to be kids! and maybe paying more attention to people buying acres of land and bulldozing and reselling are better for focusing attacks on ruining the beautiful jungles in puna, yeah?
