Kauai freelancer booted by Advertiser

Years ago I visited Kahoolawe with a group that included Kauai journalist Joan Conrow, but I've regrettably never been to Kauai where she lives and does most of her work. We stayed in touch from time to time over the years but rarely ran into one another around the state. Then just the other day Ian Lind wrote on iLand.net about Conrow losing her job as a stringer for the Honolulu Advertiser because of her blog, which I hadn't known about. It's very good, with a well-articulated slant on many things Kauai, including the ferry brouhaha that got her in hot water with the Advertiser. I just added a link to Conrow's blog, KauaiEclectic, in the links listed in the column on the left side of this page and I recommend you take a look.

Thanks Hunter. I like Joan's writing style and I now have another informative blog to read and keep up with what's happening in the other part of our indigenous land.

Joan is a good writer with integrity and lots of smarts. She covered the old geothermal battle with insight and open-mindednes, and has been a consistent voice for the environment. It's a loss for the Advertiser's readers.
Thanks for telling us about her blog.

But why does she not allow comments?

Joan was my fill-in several times at the Big Island Advertiser bureau. She covered the beat well and left no clean up problems. She was invited to stay at my home and was a perfect guest, including the time in 1988 when I quietly went to Fiji to marry Anne. She's a class act all the way in my book.

Joan has been a regular contributor to Hawaii Island Journal since I became editor (as well as to our sister paper, Honolulu Weekly). We're delighted to have her and have received many favorable comments from readers on her work.

Anonymous, I visited Joan's blog and found this post:

Comments
Some people have asked why I don't allow comments. I'm just learning about the blog world, and it's taking me time to figure out all the settings. So from now on, comments will be accepted. And if you're tempted to be mean, I refer you to the entry on Healing.
