The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Snarky on education: No apology

"A.Parent" is right, it was snarky. I could have written it more polite and politic but maybe no one would have been interested enough to read it and react. So I don't think it was "unnecessarily" snarky. Attitude served its purpose.

A.Parent also may be right that public schools can't accommodate such a gathering. But even conceding the point, how do you get from there to the Hilton Hawaiian Village?

When public schools are in such poor repair and the funds for fixing them are being cut, holding a DOE Education Summit at fancy digs in Waikiki lends kind of a let-'em-eat-cake air to the event. Things like that often make me snarky and research shows it's not good to hold it in. So I blog it. But I do appreciate A.Parent's feed back and certainly will refrain from any unecessary snarkiness in the future. Seriously.

This post was originally just intended to leave a couple of links to the education speakers that I failed to do in the previous post: Kati Hitchcock www.edtrust.org; Raymond McNulty, www.leadered.com.

No apology necessary, Hunter. Any snarkiness directed at the DOE is more than deserved. These are people who refuse to fund Charter Schools equitably, at least in part because they are beginning to look more and more like a better and more successful option than the main-line schools.

I think they should have to conduct ALL their meetings and business in facilities designated by an impartial panel as the most dilapidated public schools. That way, they might develop an appreciation for what their prime constituents, the students, have to deal with on a daily basis. Or better yet, get them a tent like some of the Charters had to start out in.

Wankine.....
Perhaps a circus tent would be the proper facility for the DOE to hold it's meetings!
I think Hunter called things just the way he should have!

Just a note....
We went to our daughters school on Parent nite (long ago). One of the teachers told us not to introduce ourselves....he already knew who we were. He then named the 4 students who were represented at the visit. At which point he said, "My 4 top students, and this is why...because their parents are involved."
Good job, Hunter. Stay involved!

I am the chair of my daughter's elementary school SCC and was invited to the Blue Ribbon ceremony 2 years ago. I was also appalled at the time as to how much the DoE was spending on that ceremony (not that we shouldn't celebrate acheivements), when the schools need so much infrastructure support they just aren't getting.

I've been to two SCC 'summits' or workshops and I found them most valuable for meeting other SCC members -- especially those from very different regions than ours. It was great to share stories, tips, and the different concerns we all had.
