The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Doug, Doug, where's the link?

Poinography! publisher Doug White, who would be left out of the protections afforded reporters under a proposed Hawaii shield law, has cogent comments as usual on the omission by Legislators.

White also chides the Honolulu Advertiser, and by inference most if not all traditional media, for not linking to his site in Derrick DePledge's story on the proposed law. The reluctance of newspapers to link to pertinent information the Web often frustrates me as well.

But then, THEN, Doug mentions my comments in the same article and does NOT link to this site. Gosh.

I'm just kidding Doug, of course, and to be fair, this site is a permanent fixture in the Poinography blogroll.

More seriously,  I discussed several issues related to the proposed shield law with DePledge and one that I wish was included in his story but wasn't is the onerous prospect of journalists being defined and ultimately licensed by some branch of government, which conceivably could be the ultimate result of this kind of legislation. Allowing governments to decide who may or may not cover official activities would be a dangerous practice that should be watched carefully and not allowed to develop.
