The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Bailey wasn't in Kulani sex program

Peter Bailey
Suspected child rapist Peter Bailey was not in the sex offenders program at Kulani Correctional Facility at all, according to today's Honolulu Advertiser story, which corrects an an earlier statement made by former state Department of Public Safety Keith Kaneshiro.

DPS spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said the department has no record that Bailey was ever in the sexual offenders program, but Bailey had been moved to the minimum-security Kulani facility on the Big Island prior to his release from prison.

McCoy's statement confirms the doubt published here yesterday about Kaneshiro's recollection that he saw Bailey's name on the sex offender program list at Kulani and questioned why he was there. Now I guess the question is, what was Kaneshiro talking about?

According to the Honolulu Advertiser article Saturday, July 28, 2007:
"Another possibility is that Bailey could have been released early through a prison furlough program."

The facility at Hale Nani is a furlough facility, and is/has been under the admin of the Kulani Warden.
