The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

State Rep. Faye Hanohano's mother dies

fayeandRt130.jpg%20002.jpgI was happy to see state Rep. Faye Hanohano at the Makuu Farmers Market Sunday but saddened to have to offer my condolences on the passing of her mother, Hannah Kaunakapu Hanohano, who died May 25 at age 86 in the hospital following a recent fall and a broken hip. Services are set for June 16 at Dodo Mortuary in Hilo.

Rep. Faye Hanohano visits her cousin, Emily Naeole (seated), in the county Councilwoman's booth at the Makuu Farmers Market Sunday.

A contributor to this blog recently made a reference to her passing in suggesting that it was somewhat unseemly to criticize our state representative in her time of sorrow. I appreciated the thought but withheld the post until I could confirm it, and am confident that no one who was aware of the situation was unkind enough to deliberately ignore it on this blog.

Rep. Hanohano, meanwhile, is leaving Thursday for Anchorage, Alaska, where she and Rep. Karen Leinani Awana of Nanakuli will represent the Hawaii State Legislature at next week's National Congress of American Indians' mid-year conference.

Well I guess this news was not printed in our Kona newspaper or maybe I just missed it but mahalo for this announcement. Sorry for this sad news. My condolences go out to Ms. Hanohano and her family.
