The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Yet another Puna real estate story

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin has an article today that's a bit more balanced and accurate than the one in Friday's New York Times. They are coming in droves -- the articles and the people -- but interestingly enough the Star-Bulletin points out that some malihini are quickly disenchanted and ready to move elsewhere already.

I had a chance to read the SB article. I agree it was a much
more balanced article on the explosive Puna growth.

Hi Hunter.... this isn't a comment. You may have seen this already: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/09/opinion/09mon4.html

The above is about race and Obama. Personally, I've thought that one of the positives in recent growth has been the influx of African Americans to the Big Island.

One way to get a grip on it is taxation... realtors, speculators, and contractors all enjoy windfall profits during the booms, while the quality of life for everyone else is diminished. A local capital gians assesment, as well as increased taxation on the mcmansions may help cool things off a little, and contibute more to infastructure improvements. Bob Jacobson, are you reading this?

Don O,
can you expand on that?

how can it be done?

also, what about the"Ag-Scams"?
Millionaires, in agregate, getting 10s of millions in tax breaks financed by low cost "ag" enterprizes
Is there a way to authenticate ag credits as a percentage of annual income to verify "true" ag enterprises?
I see large acerage, ocean front land owners paying $100 a year.

Thanks for your input.
