The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Like we need to encourage more people

As I was completing the previous post, Aaron Stene alerted me to this article in the New York Times today which will undoubtedly attract a whole new bunch of people to Puna. Why on earth didn't the author mention the horrendous traffic on Route 130? Or the noisy coquis? And that 31,335 population figure is from the 2000 census, I think. It's about a third higher now and likely to keep zooming with this kind of publicity. Thanks for the heads up, Aaron. Sigh...

I recall NY Times did a similar story on the Kona side recently. It seems the reporter tried to accentuate the
positives. But barely touch the negatives, as you mentioned.
Generally that is the same spin the NY Times did on Kona
also.

I didn't feel like registering with the NY Times in order to view the article but whatever it had to say, if some of us feel that more newcomers would further tax the infrastructure now is the time to write a letter to the NY Times editor and voice your mana'o.
