The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Charges filed against Tribune-Herald

You may have missed this since the Big Island dailies aren't likely to publish a press release that was sent out by the Hawaii Newspaper Guild (my current employer) last week. The gist of it is that the National Labor Relations Board has filed 13 unfair labor practice charges against the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. The NLRB also scheduled a hearing  on the charges to begin in Hilo on June 19. For more info check the HNG Web site.

Actually I did read an article about this either in the HTH or WHT over the weekend. I think I saw your name mentioned too, Hunter along with Peter Sur and Dave Smith.

In my 41 years on Big Island, I never saw an employer go so far out of his way to invite intervention and presumably punishment.

I'm glad to see it. I'll be happier when you and the other union members win. The profit margins for newspapers are generally immoral considering how the bottom line affects our local and national discourse.
