The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Main Street Pahoa kicks off new year

All that was left of my flu by Wednesday was a little congestion and a lingering cough, allowing me to attend the annual meeting of the Main Street Pahoa Association. Hoping there's no relapse associated with this, I’m back working at about 90-95 percent and very relieved that the worst of it lasted only three days.

The MSPA meeting was well-attended with energetic and civic-minded people, including Councilwoman Emily Naeole and her staff, Mayor Kim’s aide Andy Levin and Puna Community Police Officer John Briski.

Members elected a new 10-member board, including Lawrence Pedro, Fred Blas, Ginny Aste, Maddy Green, Luanna Jones, Shawn Heard, Laurie Lloyd-Roberts, Mike Hale and Kuulani Rosario. Rob Tucker was re-elected president.

Project discussions included the annual MSPA-sponsored Christmas Parade, Pahoa park planning, lobbying the county for a sidewalk along old Government Road from downtown to Malama Market, participation in the Puna Community Development Plan, and postal service improvements.

I took the opportunity to join and support the efforts. You can too. For more info, check out the latest MSPA newsletter.

Hi Hunter, we were pleased to see you there and very happy to have you join us. One correction to your story..... we elected co-presidents Mike Hale and Laurence Pedro. I was elected V.P. It was a good group in attendance. Aloha,
