The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Taken down by the flu bug

I am currently getting my butt kicked by a nasty flu virus. Fat lot of good that flu shot did me last fall. Now trying to keep this up under the fog of fever and medication is pointless. I will be out of commission until further notice.

Meanwhile, Roger Christie has offered his take on Wednesday's County Council budget hearing at which marijuana eradication was discussed. Let's hope the Council members now have the courage and good sense to follow through and end this wasteful program.

A hui hou.

Hunter sorry you got the flu bug and hope things get better for you soon. Last fall, 3 folks went to get a flu shot from my office and 2 of them came down with the flu shortly afterwards.

Hunter,

A year ago the state ran short of flu shot juice so it was dished out to the ones that were most at risk. I fell short of hitting that list, so no juice for me. Luck struck and no flu for me last year. This year I was one of the first to get a poke from the new supply. Bingo, you guested it, took me 30 days to get rid of the rotten thing and still have a touch of it. Go figure!

Aloha Hunter and all,

I just went through the most difficult flu I have ever had. It took alomost a month to start to get over it! The worst part for my own version of this flu, was the stomach cramps that limited my ability to eat most everything. I finally realized that the good bacteria in my intestine were wiped out by the stomach flu itself. When I finally realized that fact, I went out and got a bottle of acidophilus from the health food store so that I could rebuild my damaged digestive system. I began to get better.

I hope you don't have that version of the flu and wish you a quick and complete recovery. If you find that you are not digesting your food very well, get the acidophilus and it may help to speed your recovery.

Best wishes on a fast return to good health and vitality Hunter. We send our healing vibes your way.

Mahalo,
Keola Downing
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Sir. Nyquil is a wonderful thing! If you have a sore throat or you're coughing a lot, please gargle with Hawaiian salt (teaspoon) in warm water (full glass), at least every couple hours.

Sorry to sound like your old Aunty giving you remedies. Please take care.

Wakine,

I like your remedy best, but without the tea, ginger and honey.

Aloha Hunter,

Hope you beat the flu, and soon.

I'll throw in my remedy: echinecea.

Also, about the whiskey, honey, and lemon. It's very good to get that much needed rest.
If you are short of honey and lemon, well... that's ok. Go with what you have ;)

Kim here

When our daughter was 9-12, she got sick in early Jan., and stayed sick most of Jan. and Feb. One of the Doctors we saw gave the following 'advice'.

"If she was older, I'd recommend a HOT TODDY, but since she's to young for a HOT TODDY, I can't recommend a HOT TODDY. But a HOT TODDY would really help."

So, I also like the tea, whiskey, honey and lemon medication for the flu. It always helped in our household. Heck, It may also be a better deal than that damned flu shot. Brian had to do the flu shot in the Military...it nearly killed him twice before they let him out of it! Since he doesn't drink....he can't even do the Whiskey thing! Poor Boy!

Over the last 30 plus years, new drugs have been created not according to new or real science but according to how much bucks it can make for drug companies. Drug companies don't need good science anymore. All they have to do is pay the researcher enough bucks to distort the clinical studies and make the drug look good. Drugs unlike nutrional supplements, can be patented and patented drugs with good clinical trials make money for drug companies. Any adverse effects are hidden from the pubic but used later to invent a new epidemic or a new disease which in turn gives the drug companies reason to invent yet another money-making drug. The public is left clueless as to why they are feeling sicker after taking these drugs and the drug companies are free to prey on the public all over again. Flu vaccines unfortunately are a part of this scheme.

More whiskey!! You'll feel better whether it cures you or not. I don't know if it's still true, but the main ingredient of Nyquil used to be (you guessed it) ALCOHOL. My girlfriend in college worked nights at a dry-out clinic, and they were always confiscating Nyquil from the patients.
