The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Lingle had Haraga in deep, deep freeze

Ola'a-born Rodney Haraga was so far out of the loop in the Lingle administration that for a year-and-a half all he did as state Transportation Director was sign checks because that was his legal obligation, according to this story by long-time Maui News reporter Harry Eager. Depositions  for a lawsuit filed by Pacific Wings against the state describe a bizarre situation in which Haraga's DOT deputies reported directly to Gov. Lingle during the final 18 months of his term, eliminating the director from all information and decision-making. Haraga was not kept on in Lingle's new cabinet following her recent re-election. The governor said that's what Haraga wanted. Haraga didn't agree.

Rod Haraga is a good man. He truly had the communities interests at heart. I left the Dems because I saw they hired only yes men. Now I see the GOP succumbing to the same crap. I can tell you from personal experience PARTY HACKS yield way TO MUCH POWER. Rod probably, did what he thought was best. In either party that can be a disaster. Sad we ask people to serve and then kick the @$*! out of them. I wonder why we have problems filling vacancies?

In case you missed the Advertiser yesterday, Mr. Haraga started working with the County of Honolulu in mid-January. Mayor Hanneman appreciates his experience. Good for him, he deserves a good position.

Yes, I missed reading the HA yesterday but thanks for the good news. I am totally disappointed in Lingle but am glad that Mayor Hannemen recognized the talents of a brilliant engineer. Hurray for Haraga.
