The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Visit Kevin's Fight Against Leukemia

I was hoping my friend Kevin Jakahi might be at Saturday's Newspaper Guild Christmas party in Hilo. Local sports fans remember Kevin's work for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald where he and I worked together for at least 15 years. I haven't seen him in months.

But Kevin's still having a rough go with leukemia and hasn't worked in over a year. Take a
a look at his Web site and you'll see why he didn't make it to the party. Better yet, read his two articles there and perhaps find yourself a new perspective on life.

Kevin e-mailed his regrets about the union party (his wife Ayako and "The Little One," his daughter Karina, were a pleasure to see however). He also said he's "feeling fine and pluggin' away."

Kevin's writing about his struggle with the disease is such a vivid depiction of towering inner strength that I'm putting Kevin's Fight Against Leukemia in the Links section of this page where you can check it out whenever you need a quick fix on your priorities.
