The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal
I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger. Puna has been my family's home since 1993.
Friday, November 30, 2007 at 10:59AM It's Friday morning and I'm sitting at home waiting for Oceanic Time-Warner to come see why my sound is no good on channel 52, which carries the County Council meetings.
I switched from Dish Network to Oceanic about a year ago to get the Council meetings but it's been a constant disappointment. And I'm just talking about the sound quality. Unlistenable. My family's been after me to switch back to the dish because it's a better product overall. But recently I complained about the sound here and several people said they don't have that problem. Aaron Stene recommended contacting Oceanic so I did. Probably should have done it a long time ago. But here's probably why I didn't.
It's 11:28 and the guy still hasn't called or come. They gave me the 8 a.m. to noon window. At 10 I called and confirmed the appointment. The computer knew. Now the window's closing fast. I can't use the phone for fear of missing the cable guy's call, and if he doesn't get here soon it'll likely be after noon when I finally get out of the house. If he's not here by noon I'll have to go, pretty much convinced we're going back to dish.
No, they didn't make it. I stayed home an extra half hour but no one called or came. Aaron Stene is right about the $20 credit, too. I just got off the phone with Oceanic (ignore the choices and click '0' to get a live person) and was offered the credit on my bill without asking. They also wanted me to schedule another date. I felt like Charlie Brown asking Lucy to hold the football for me again. Those cable folks are a lot of laughs. I suggested it be a Saturday next time. But no Saturdays are available. Someone will call when a Saturday opens up and that's a promise. Now how much do I really want Pete Hoffmann and friends in my home before I go crawling back to Dish Network to get the family off my back?

Patience is a virtue that cable companies like to test.
Do you have more then one TV in your place?
I notice on one of my TV's the reception is better then the other.
I wonder if that's the splitter, the cable, or the actual TV's.
(I guess I shall never forgive a t & t for not canceling its service following my brother's death and instead asking that he "reconsider." One of the biggest outrages in my lifetime.)
