The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Does anyone watch the Council on TV?

James Weatherford offers a bit of  insight here and asks whether anyone watches the channel 52 replays of Hawaii County Council meetings.

I don't know how anyone can if they get the same feed I do. The fuzzy, clipped sound makes it practically unwatchable. I switched from DISH satellite to Oceanic Time-Warner cable about a year ago mainly to get Council meetings and other public access programming. But there's little of interest on the few public access channels that don't suffer technical problems. Cable's picture isn't as good and its onscreen program guide is vastly inferior to satellite. So we're going back to the dish.

But on Weatherford's question, even if they made it easy to watch, I think only a few would bother. That's not to say it isn't a valuable service. I just wish I could get the Council meetings clearly because I would watch from time to time. I'd think Time-Warner would be interested in getting better quality throughout their channel lineup unless they don't want to encourage competition for their pay channels in any way. The other conspiracy theory is that the Council only wants to make an appearance of openness by replaying its meetings on cable -- you just can't watch them because the sound is so poor. But honestly I don't know where the problem lies. But if the problem is not just on my TV, no one's being served well by the arrangement.

Are you having problems viewing any of the other channels besides the public access ones ? Do you have Digital cable also ? We have digital cable here in Kona- no problems.

It sounds like there is possibly a node issue in your area.
Which is causing your poor TV signal ? If I were you I'd insist on having a truck roll to check out what the problem is before ditching back to satellite.

I watch the Council meetings too, not always consistently. Sometimes, for sheer entertainment value, "It's better than Benny Hill!" as Geoffrey the Butler would say,

I don't watch Channel 52 like I used to 4 years ago because the sound is weak. In fact at full volume on my 13 inch TV, the sound is weaker than before such that I have sit up close face to face with the TV to make sense of what is being broadcast.

With all the hams playing to the camera om the currently dysfunctional council I cannot imagine even the most severely impacted insomniac tuning in.

Anybody who actually watches the County Council on TV should consider pulling nomination papers in February. Especially Puna Girl.
I never had problems with watching the council meetings on TV.
Its because of my work schedule I cannot watch it anymore though.

Good for the comments coming in from "Hugh Clark" and "The Council has always been Dysfunctional". If the Council has always been dysfunctional then why all the big deal about Naeole changing her mind?

It also runs way too late to be of any real use. If they can video-conference it across the island, why can't they broadcast on cable simultaneously or certainly re-run it that evening?
