The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Candidates are cousins; ballots were all counted by midnight, once upon a time

Long-time Honolulu Advertiser Hilo reporter Hugh Clark, now retired, weighed in by e-mail on races in his favorite district:

" ... just read your recent blogs and I did not see any reference to the fact Naeole and Hanohano are cousins, ... are not shrinking violets and should make interesting copy if elected, which I presume is likely.

"As for the terribly late returns, when I came in 1966 they hand-counted ballots and it was far more efficient. The Trib wrapped before midnight with precinct-by-precinct returns. For once, I agree with Lingle. We need to discard the whole mess left from since they removed responsibility (for elections) from the lieutenant governor. Surely, John Waihee, Ben Cayetano and possibly Mazie Hirono did a better job than the bureaucrats."
