The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Pahoa? Of course

Poinography blogger Doug White asked readers to submit questions for a dozen candidates vying to fill the seat being vacated by Ed Case. On a whim, I asked whether they had ever been to Pahoa. Only two, Democrat Gary Hooser and Republican Quentin Kawananakoa,  responded.

Hooser said:

"Yes of course, many times. If you drive through Pahoa you will see many “Hooser” yard signs. Pahoa is on the way to Kalapana’s famous black sand beach. I have friends who are proud graduates of Pahoa High, home of the Pahoa Daggers."

 Kawananakoa replied:

"Yes, I have, and I love the place. I have family living all across the Big Island Kona, Volcano, Ka’u."

Several other questions of greater substance were asked and answered. Read Kawananakoa's responses here, and Hooser's responses here. Too bad the others invited did not respond. Those others, who will be on your ballot for U.S. Representative, Congressional District 2,  are Democrats Hanalei Aipoalani, Nestor Garcia, Colleen Hanabusa, Clayton Hee, Mazie Hirono, Matt Matsunaga, Ron Menor, Brian Schatz and Joe Zuiker. Bob Hogue joins Kawananakoa as  the only two Republicans making a run for the seat.  Robert Wilcox of Lahaina is running as a non-partisan. All of the other candidates listed are from Oahu.

To be fair to the others, I should point out that I didn't actively seek a respons from every candidate. I left it to the readers to ping on candidates that they wanted to hear from. Hooser had originally wanted an "interview" and I suggested the readers provide the questions. Kawananakoa's team stepped in after the questions were online.

Thanks for the links!

Thanks for hook up with the Congressional campaign.
Lots of BIG issues. I hope others will put forward questions -- at this point I will put one question+ :
Would you vote for articles of impeachment against the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense? Would you introduce these articles of impeachment?
