The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Tiffany Edwards, others quit WHT

West Hawaii Today's Hilo reporter, Tiffany Edwards, has turned in her resignation after five-and-a-half years at the Stephens Media-owned Kona newspaper. A source close to what's happening said Edwards is fed up with Editor Reed Flickinger's interference with her coverage of East Hawaii and Hawaii County Government.

I understand that WHT reporters Betsy Tranquili and Carolyn Lucas also have  submitted resignations this week, reportedly over similar difficulties with Flickinger.

Edwards in the past has made no secret of her displeasure with her boss. But she was suspended for a day without pay last  month apparently for not being tough enough in her coverage of the Hawaii County Council. Flickinger reportedly would pressure her to bludgeon the county government and the council in her news stories, would change her copy to suit his own agenda as he felt necessary, and then would publish the heavily edited versions of her stories in the news section under Edwards' byline.

The resignation comes on the heels of particularly harsh criticism leveled at the newspaper and Flickinger in particular by defeated incumbent Council members Dr. Fred Hoslchuh and Virginia Isbell at Monday's Council meeting, which Edwards reported.

Flickinger tells his reporters what stories to write, what questions to ask and what answers to get, the source said, and  abuses them verbally if they don't write what he expects to read. Apparently Edwards finally had enough and gave two weeks notice on Tuesday.

Wowee, is this earth shattering news or what? Can we hope to read about this in the WHT over the weekend? Or are these women really leaving to accept new jobs with the County Council? I heard rumor that Tiffany might get a position as a legislative aid or something but I am not sure about the rest. I have never cared for Betsy T's reporting and have had to call her at least 3 times on some bad news. It seems that her writing style mirrors her bad attitude. Carolyn's articles have mostly been accurate. Poor Tiffany. Once one knows Mr. F's personality, one can tell what part of her articles belonged to him. It was really obvious to some of us. I am now wondering if her suspension had something to do with not getting enough information for Mr. F from Stanford Carr. Very interesting. Best wishes to Tiffany and the other 2 women.
Very interesting turn of events. It wouldn't surprise me
if we don't see this covered in WHT.

I guess some lucky High School journalists should be expecting a call any day now. Newspapers fully reported by unpaid interns. Fully realized profit.

After reading this site for many weeks, I decided to post now: What does anyone here think of the turnover at the Tribune-Herald as well as West Hawaii Today?

Aloha 'Anonymous',

Not sure I have though much about it, except for the outlandish tales I hear from Hunter and other journalists who shall remain unnamed, because of you know what...

I would like to have an alternative source of local daily news. (I know, dead trees and all that...but, how about audio - video...?)

Typical. Check out Betsy's story on abandoned vehicles in the 12/12 WHT. It begins with a sentence well outside what would ordinarily be allowed in a Mainstream publication:

"Abandoned vehicles on West Hawaii roads might actually be moved before they are stripped down to their axles and rocks are thrown through the windshield."

I'm sure that was fun to write, but sarcasm is confined to the editorial page in real newspapers, Reed.

The story goes on the quote "Donald Ho," an error Betsy isn't likely to have made because she called Nelson Ho by his first name during the interview.

Regardless of the origin of the error, it's pretty clear Reed is so busy grinding axes he's forgotten to do his damn job.

Ummm, Hunter I hate to break it to you, but Ms. Lucas has not resigned and isn't going to resign and Ms. Tranquilli's leaving had nothing to do with Reed, but rather because her fiance was transferred by his job to another island and she wanted to spend christmans with her sister who is very ill in the hospital again. Both these facts are very common knowledge for those who actually work with these women in Kona, as opposed to whatever inside sources you have in Hilo. You should double check your sources before you post such wrong accusations

Don't worry Rodion. If they can't find any High School journalists, they might settle for a nerd like you!

Aloha, everybody:
It's Tiffany Edwards here. I'm seeing this blog for the first time today and it is moments after someone who posted a comment on this site hollered out "Get a job!" as they walked past me.
Now I know how he knew I didn't have a job anymore! Made me wonder if he meant to be so cruel or if he just has a shitty sense of humor.
Truth be told, I'm totally uncomfortable being talked about and speculated about on this blog, particularly when it doesn't tell the whole story. And I'm not saying the whole story publicly at the moment.
People who have questions or comments about me and my professional life should call me at 808.938-8592) or e-mail me at tiffany@bighawaii.net.
I'm not going to speak about or on behalf of anybody who is a current or former employee of the newspaper I used to work for, but I'd like to clarify some things said by some bloggers on this site:
I don't have plans to work for any council person as a legislative aide. I don't have any plans to work for the County of Hawaii, for that matter.
I didn't work for the West Hawaii Today as an "unpaid intern," and I am not a "High School journalist" as the person dubbed "Rodion" implied. I have a college degree and nearly a decade's worth of experience in newspapering.
Feel free to speculate about and discuss the state of print media on the island, but leave me out of the discussion. Again, you are invited to talk story with me via e-mail or on the phone, but it really is inappropriate to blog about someone you don't know.

Happy Holidays, people!

Imagine my surprise to find my sister disrespected in a public forum. Clearly, the facts of this matter will only be known to her, Greed Pudflicker, and very few others.

I'd appreciate directing your remarks on this matter not to my sister, but to the editor of WHT. He seems to need some understanding of appropriateness.

But, your blog doesn't help much, either.

well Tiffy is the legislative rep. for counsil woman Emilie Naeole, in Puna and made four calls to the asst. prosecutor, a lt. in the hilo PD who's liasion for the HPP Neighborhood Watch, The HPP Owners Association, and the head of out HPP Neighborhood Watch (which I am the Treasurer and Bureaucratic Liasion. Not to metion head of our own Neighbor Watch on my street)who knows who else. But I called the council woman's office last tues. and got tif on the phone. I told her of the $3000. the council gave to HPP NW for last year was tied up in the PD dept. until my inquries a couple months ago. Now Tif told me to cc her in my email to Harry Kim and she gave me a half dozen email addresses to cc for 3-4 news papers etc. said she'd make sure it would stir up something. Wed, I had a NW meeting at my house with a dozen of my neighbors half whom have already been robbed, and not a ripple or even an aknowledgement from her that she even got the cc. I emailed her the next day and asked her "where's da beef?" She talked a lot of Mac but it was all bun. So this morning as I'm painting yellow sign blanks for NW signs because money is tied up in red tape, she calls, starts givin me all kinds shit. Emails me and starts the email, "Dude, I've been out of my office..." Dude?
So I write her back "Dudette" forget about it. So while I'm volunteering my time for my neighbors this "legislative not gonna be" is waisting time calling and whinning about my abrasive personality, or whatever. Well I think if she put that effort into positive stuff like assisting in getting funds dibursed easier, or following up on information about illegal grubbing I've been pumping into all county and state agencies I can over the last 5 years. No she seems to have time to call around and bad moth me, who paying for her time to do this? Why couldn't you guys find her a job and keep her over there in Kona? I read here whine her too, with a college education you learn to begin correspondence with "Dude", not even Dear Dude. And tiffy if you thought you could get me in trouble, lol or fired? lol I'm the one who started my neighbor watch and you might be hearing from them. Can't believe we got one busy body doing make work.

The only reason you might become disenchanted with doing this is if the rest of the people are not as interested as you or more interested than you as they all have less security and more to lose than you do, if they aren't as hyped as you are, it just means that their not taking this as seriously as they should be and they are being lacksidazical about grasping your extended hand, good nature, caring attitude and your dilligent efforts, after all it's their community too and if they don't care as much as you do then they deserve what they get and in this particular instance what they will get is burglarized. I know that you have put in much effort on their behalf but, you must also remember, that in this life you reap what you sew, if you sew nothing you reap nothing and you Peter, will always be able to say that you tried your best to enlighten them.

Your neighbors have much to lose and you have nothing to lose and I don't mean nothing as in you don't own anything. I mean nothing as in the fact that you have a 6'or 8' fence all around the perimeter of your property, with locks and four extremely large Mastidanes who are on guard duty 24-7 without fail. I used to live in a much smaller subdivision than the one you live in, mine was only 2, 2 block long dead end streets with a 1 block long street interconnecting them. We had a rash of burglaries in my subdivision during the middle of the afternoons when people were at work and I was the only house that was not burglarized because I had 2 large doberman pinscher's at the time. It's very easy to break into a house, if a burglar makes it onto your property then their pretty much home free and that's why it's so important to have an attentive neighborhood watch commitee so that they can be stopped on the street before they get on your property. I applaud Peter Frost for his efforts. Considering the fact that he has better than the most high tech security system you could buy living right on his property (ADT couldn't do a better job than those Mastidanes). So, I am taking this to mean that all his efforts in initiating and overseeing this neigborhood watch commitee are coming purely from the goodness of his heart and his concern for the well-being, protection and safety of his neighbors and their homes and also the community that he has chosen to settle in and taken pride in calling "his home".

In light of all this, I am appaled that Tiffany Edwards did not bend over backwards to help Peter Frost with the efforts he is trying to put into this neighborhood watch commitee. I'm so sorry to have to say this, but: Shame On You Tiffany!!!!

Not only for not aiding Peter in trying to be the best citizen he can possibly be, but also for calling the authorities on him because you mistook the frustration he has been facing with this plight for abbrasiveness.

I live in a town with a population of 29,000 people. Based on an average of 4 persons occupying each home (mother, father and 2 children). We have roughly 7,250 homes in the town I live in. The subdivision that Peter Frost is trying to help will have roughly 8,800 homes upon it's completion.

We have a fully staffed full fledged bonafide police department for our small town and they keep plenty busy.
Your subdivision on the other hand has nothing as far as I'm concerned except the neighborhood watch that Peter Frost is doggedly trying to get off the ground without much help so far, especially from you.

When I lived in that small 2 block long subdivision, we only had county sheriff protection and we never saw them unless we called them and then we could wait up to 1/2 hour or more for them to arrive. After the rash of burglaries that I mentioned above we started a neighborhood watch commitee and the county provided us immediately with ample signage on every block that were the same size as speed limit signs and they were also sunk into the ground by county workers and it was all paid for by the county.
Haste makes waste, don't wait for the inevitable to happen, it's not if it's going to happen it's when. All the lots in the subdivision I was in were 1/2 acre lots, yours are twice that size and our 1/2 acre lots were a veritable cake walk for burglars. It's very easy to kick a bat or a stick out of a sliding glass patio door for a burglar and they walked off with stoves, refrigerators, televisions, jewelry and much more. Those houses were pretty much emptied out by the burglars.

To a burglar HPP is like a wild west town with no sheriff and it's ripe for their taking and they will be their if something isn't done about it. Peter's neighbors and Tiffany Edwards need to take this issue much more seriosly than they seem to be doing and Tiffany should apologize to Peter Frost and then she needs to give him all the assistance and help that her schedule will allow.

Having revisited this from a link in Hunter's latest post, I'll defend myself and apologize for any misconstrued criticism of Tiffany Edwards. The point of my comment was my belief that Stephens Media was purposely making it hard for good-experienced journalists to stay at the papers making way for them to hire green kids (cheaper and more malleable) out of school. It was a sarcastic comment directed at Stephens. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Interesting that HPP is still plagued with burgleries after all these years. I remember almost 20 years ago, it had the same reputation that kept us from buying there but homes were sparse then unlike now. Kinda hard to expect immediate police protection when homes are spaced out an acre or more apart. Seems like high fences, lots of barking dogs and some leniency in the animal control bill regarding barking dogs would be a good solution for properties where homes are spaced out over one acre lots.
