The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Wet weekend wrapup

All right, it's Saturday morning after a long week with little progress to report on the new contract. It's pouring rain and the 8 a.m. reading says a couple of inches fell in the past 24 hours at Pahoa and more than three inches in Mountain View. The weather should stay pretty cool and wet through most of the weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters, but if there's a window in the clouds Sunday morning we may see the season's first snow atop Mauna Kea. Meanwhile, I'm off to the Puna Open House at Keaau Middle School, which is about to start and last until 1:30 p.m.
