The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.
-- Hawaii Island Journal

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Kupuna Emma Kauhi

I would be sadly remiss in failing to note the recent passing of Emma Kauhi, who died Nov. 8 at age 90. Aunty Emma kindly helped this malihini reporter at the start of his Big Island career, and was gracious whenever called on for information or comments over the years. Her rich legacy is part of the Hula Preservation Society Web site, a wonderful resource and tribute to hula. Click for a brief bio and photos.

My condolences. I have never heard of Aunty Emma but I am sure she will be missed by the Puna community.
