Power or irrelevancy for Puna winner?

Developers,  check your bulldozers at the door. The Hawaii County Council is poised to become dominated by Sierra Club-backed environmentalists for the first time in Big Island history.

Maybe people missed this in a recent post about the Stacy Higa brouhaha in Kona, but if Brenda Ford defeats pro-development incumbent Virginia Isbell next week, environmentalists will control five seats on the nine-member Council and complete a stunning five-candidate sweep of 2006 Hawaii County Council elections, effecting a dramatic political power shift the likes of which the Green Party only ever dreamed about.

Only Ford remains to be elected among the five Sierra Club-backed candidates in contested races (Bob Jacobson, Angel Pilago, Pete Hoffmann and Dominic Yagong are already in), and Ford narrowly outpolled Isbell in the primary yet failed to win a majority of votes, forcing Tuesday's runoff.

The  implications are  huge for Puna's Fifth District. A Ford win would make the Puna seat largely irrelevant in the power lineup of five environmentalists, three pro-development members, and either Gary Safarik or Emily Naeole, whichever one emerges from Tuesday's runoff in Puna. But if Isbell holds onto her seat, the Fifth District winner becomes a major swing vote player, even perhaps a kingmaker, able to wheel and deal for the betterment of Puna by holding and trading the crucial fifth vote in the most akamai way.

Meanwhile, the building industry must be pulling its hair out with Ford already speaking the dreaded m(oratorium)-word in her campaign. With such big stakes the Isbell-Ford race is going high-profile, featuring pro-development Council Chairman Stacy Higa's dustup with Ford campaigner Matthew Binder at an Isbell fundraiser for Kona Hospital last week, resulting in both men filing criminal harassment charges, and in Binder's recent allegations that a mainland developer is a major funding source for Isbell's campaign.

Binder charged Monday that "Citizens for Kona," which backs Isbell, is a front for the Atlanta, Georgia-based Jacoby Group, a development firm with business in West Hawaii. Binder told the Governor's West Hawaii Advisory Council that Rick Vidgen, who was installed Monday as the governor's Advisory Council chair, has placed ads on local radio stations and in West Hawaii Today that are paid for by Current Events, a Kona public relations firm, and that Jacoby is a client of Current Events.

Binder said in a letter to the Advisory Council that he filed a complaint with the Campaign Spending Commission:

Today, the Commission received a complaint about an apparently phony organization pretending to be a committee of grassroots "citizens" spending thousands of dollars on a race for county council here in Kona. And it seems that the person responsible for this seemingly illegal campaigning is non other than your newly designated chairman, Mr. Vidgen and/or his wife.

Vidgen's wife, Jeannette, is employed by Current Events. Rick Vidgen, a former macadamia nut industry exec, is employed by Clark Realty in Waimea. Binder's letter continued:

"This is a clear corruption of the democratic process, when lobbyists and public relations firms pretend to be citizen's groups in order to effect (sic) an election. It is doubly bad when they do it in ways that are blatantly illegal in order to hide their involvement. I demand that the ads stop NOW. I do not think Governor Lingle will want to be associated with this kind of behavior. You will be doing her a favor to act quickly now that you have been advised of this illegal activity.

Pretty weak stuff...

Rick Vidgen, who was installed Monday as the governor's Advisory Council chair, has placed ads on local radio stations and in West Hawaii Today that are paid for by Current Events, a Kona public relations firm, and that Jacoby is a client of Current Events…

ooooh oooh they use the same PR firm oooh!

Vidgen's wife, Jeannette, is employed by Current Events. Rick Vidgen, a former macadamia nut industry exec, is employed by Clark Realty in Waimea.

mac nuts, realtors, and she works at the PR firm--OK NOW HE'S PROVEN HIS CASE! Clearly Vidgen supports Isbell--he must be imprisoned at once.

Finally, a worthwhile issue to discuss. It is true that the Sierra Club has managed to infiltrate our county government and has an upper hand in setting our County Council agenda by promising powerful positions in exchange for public funds to finance their agenda.
Activist judges - Ibarra in Kona - also promote and encourage "Greenmail" whereby so-called environmentalists for the sake of lawsuit settlements, grow their coffers and continue suing taxpayers.
I'm not so sure Dominic Yagong will align with Jacobson's group. The defeat of Virginia Isabell would hurt the politics of compromising on issues and standing on principle for the sake of some special interest groups. What is interesting is that nobody, absolutely nobody on our County Council stands up for the general public. Bypassing the process to put an issue on the ballot - open spaces - is a classic example. In addition, there are no councilmembers willing to stand up and say the the "open spaces" amendment, confiscating 2% of our property taxes does not require the 2% taken to buy properties. It, in fact, will become a slush fund, beyond voter scrutiny, thanks to activists who only want their share to buy those properties they have identified. In addition, where is the corresponding appropriations - capital and operating funds - to fully implement the intended purchases for public parks.access?
Isn't it the responsibility of our elected to make sure we know what is being proposed? What I'm seeing is politics at its worse. Hopefully, Naiole's win will slow the raid on our tax money, Yagong will remember life as a non-political and Yoshimoto will lend some sanity to a runaway and clueless power hungry council.

1st, Lack (?) funny you think you know me
nope, you lack.

2nd, You Gary supporters keep trying to turn this into politics as usual. You cannot, it is not.

All this week we have been resisting entering into the fight. After myself personally watching folks with Gary shirts on,this past Sunday steal Emily's signs in the night. We few sweated blood to buy them with our fundraisers! (What no big negative you can pull out of your hat-- you have to go after our fundraising methods?)

(HOW far is Gary down now??? and why didn't he pay off his campaign dept while he was in office? He started down, what, $25,000.00? Emily is at least IN THE BLACK! Practical political question... Do you want someone handling your money who cannot handle his own???? We could point out his other financial slip, if you want to go negative.)

I sat and decided no, I WOULDN'T CALL THE COPS. (Go negative) I would allow the Aina (Aumakua) to judge and adjust. <-- This after a beginning (SEEMS LIKE YEARS AGO:)) that started with Gary himself telling me personally to get off the red road, it was inappropiate to campaign at a Sunday beach clean-up!

Now you make a political issue out of a daughters' angst!

Where do you people really hail from, what is it that you are trying to force the living land into... California, Las Vegas? You have only to ask Emily where she stands and she will tell you! Is she a slick smooth talkin Politician? Thank Akua, NO!

But the lies that are spread are so un-ALOHA FIRST!
She is NOT against Gays, naked beaches, or Good Roads!
She doesn't decide until she immerses herself in each issue so she can make an INFORMED decision. THIS is the type of NEW BLOOD that I want to see running my Hawai'ian Government.

THIS is the type of ANCIENT BLOOD I want to support to bring about a more considered and concerned ALOHA FIRST COUNTY COUNCIL! We need to stay slowed down, loving and forgiving!

This IS NOT an IGNORANT, THOUGHTLESS POSITION! (LACK!)
It is a careful, considered position, based on historical facts and past failings. And putdowns cannot change truth!

WAR WILL NEVER CEASE-- UNTIL IT CEASES IN OUR HEARTS!

Shame on those raising the religion in politics issue. Emily's tough outer-skin right now is her God, she is alone and dealing with neg politics that are hurtful. Will she toughen-up as much as Gary has in the past 4 years? I hope not, this is why I am voting for her. She cares deeply, but in all these years has never forced her views on me, in return I can allow her her spiritual support, however she finds it, her husband is gone, who should she trust? She may be normally very strong, but for goodness sake, she is human.

I forgive the Gary supporters, you know who you are, I didn't call the cops on you because you are so pitifully POOR! You who are calling the 'bad' shots are so scared!

Because against all your dirtiest political tricks...

ALOHA FIRST! is beating the pants off of you!

Everybody turn out for the BIG WAVE Thursday Nov 2nd Ke'eau! 4pm

OK, let me see if I've got this right. First those of us who don't want religion imposed onto politics are told by Ms. Valentino that we are out of line and don't matter. And now the inevitable "where do you people really hail from?" question from Auntiefaith. Your Aloha First slogan apparently is only for those who were not born somewhere else. No Aloha for the rest. With friends and supporters putting out venom like that, poor Ms. Naeole doesn't need enemies or mysterious Gary Safarik supporters taking down her signs in the night. Just keep putting this stuff out and you will do Mr. Safarik's work for him. Thanks!
November 1, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterWankine
Ya thanks Autie Faith for Showing me Garys true side... to Wankine dont worry... aloha is always present... maybe to people who understands what it means... aloha is what you make of it if you dont show it how will you exspect to receice it...hello and wake up...DUDE
November 2, 2006 | Unregistered Commenternativeroots
Nativeroots, you are right. People who expect kindness must show it. Ms. Naeole's supporters might want to try to pursuade others to join their cause by showing them how their candidate has better ideas and policies, not by showing anger, now matter how badly they feel provoked. What I have seen and heard from Ms. Naeole herself, while somewhat politically naive, has been positive and friendly. I cannot fault her for that part of her, which is very nice and admirable. I am certain that even her overt religious orientation comes from a good place in her heart. I just don't think it is appropriate in the political arena. I would rather hear what concrete ideas she has to make our lives in Puna better.
November 2, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterWankine
Just another thought. Other candidates have posted here. I am sure a lot of people would like to hear from Ms. Naeole herself about things like better police protection, parks, transportation plans, commercial development, alternative roads out of Puna, and any other issues she might want to discuss.
November 2, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterWankine
Wankine.....which candidates are you referring to? I've ONLY read comments here written by Brian Jordan. Did I miss the blogs written by by Gary Safarik, Aaron Anderson or Faye Hanohano. Let me know if I did, so I can read through them and find out how THEY feel about the issues at hand too.
November 3, 2006 | Unregistered Commenter*
Just to let you know that I did not post the Nov 2 post.and that is not my writing style (and dude is not a favorite word of mine)
Anyway, getting back to Binder's false accusations, Vidgen sign waves for Isbell and his wife Jeanette is an employee of Current Events.Vidgen is not the owner of Current Events. Its easy to find out who the owner of Current Events is but as Binder demonstrates in true trouble making form, he would rather get up there and falsely accuse.Plus Virginia is not pro-development. The developments that I have seen her approve so far have to do with affordable housing or schooling. Before she votes, she always makes the developer give something back to the community first. Jacoby happens to already have an agreement with DHHL and there is no way that DHHL is going to cancel it. But Virginia is being blamed for favoring Jacoby just because she has come forward to explain that DHHL operates through its own master plan. The other part of the Jacoby project has to do with DLNR but nothing is solid yet.Current Events is one of the consultants that Jacoby used to interview a number of us in the community for the draft EIS. Virginia has a lot more experience than Ford and she is more in tune with the community needs. Although I don't agree with everything she does, I can see where she is coming from and it is always with the community in mind.
{snip} You dip your pen in venom instead of ink. What are you trying to accomplish? The Lack {end SNIP}

Back at you Lack!

You have nothing better to do then put Hunters' period at the end of all posts--- on this blog!(alot of folks think Lack is really hunter in disguise---happy holloween!--- not me Lack, i know!)

You still know nothing at all about me, spew YOUR VENOM OPINIONS and make it clear you are a very strong Gary supporter. PS this is america and i can stand on any corner anyday and yell (as you put it) anything I want, you sometimes are so dumb!

{SNIP} I hope that you will display "Aloha" to all people, whoever they support, and curb your rumour-mongering.
Debbie Safarick {end SNIP}

You are right Debbie, why believe me...

The financial info is straight out of the Tribune!
They said it, not me. You can not really assume we will all believe your story... as stated, A campaign loan is a campaign loan and you can get it anywhere you want it-- It doesn't change the basic facts!!! It is a loan to his campaign, which you get back if the people pay!
... and RUMOR has it he is in debt twice that now...
or else why get so upset?

As for the signs, you have only to look at the number of safarik signs that have replaced Emily's to "get it!"
But you are right just my word against... (sort of like lack, huh! and all those who remain unknown?)

Next time I will call the cops so there is no problem right? Happy aloha to you! (How come you do not defend his comment to me on the road? Know better????? Or perhaps you know I was only speaking for myself, and not raising the other (HORRIFIC) comments he made to Emily and the other women on our team.) How would he defend thos comments???

But we actually have the same folks in Gary shirts on video tape at a campaign forum, the fact that they didn't know they were being filmed makes it a very interesting film! We actually confronted them about our proof and it was that very same night they so boldly stole!!!!

Don't tempt me (a long time political activist, blogger, no dummy, NOT FROM HERE!) to play along with your negative tactics...

I can do negative on a level that would put even Lackey to shame!

I NEVER SPOKE OR EVER WILL SPEAK FOR EMILY!!!!
Nice try Lack!
After Tues i need to get back to my own work.
(Something which, by all your posts, LACK, you lack!)
Hows that for tit for tat!

Notice everyone ----> Lackey only has the intelligence for personal attacks!

HE is DYING DESPERATE to get you to vote for Gary (WHO I VOTED FOR LAST TIME!!!!) he will attack anything that moves and like a five year old always has to have the last word. ASK HIM WHY he is this blogs lackey??? and Gary's lackey and if GARY is so special, where is the polite political conversation, the reasonable arguments from LACK!

He has none... Lackey is scared Emily will win, so is Gary!
It has come down to personal political attacks! Because they have dug and there is no real dirt on Emily!!

The baby whines of 'why won't Emily answer,' 'why won't Emily say'
---> is the most MATURE ARGUMENT left in the bag of dirty tricks! ASK HER,why don't you STUPID!!!!

Just to set the record straight!

My posting here is against Emily's rules!

I have been told repeatedly not to say ANYTHING BAD about Gary or his people. Trust me I have so much bad crap from gary and his folks it is making me sick to hold it in!

But I am not Hawai'ian, not from here, been voting SINCE the sixties and would love to lay my credentials against any of you 'calling me stupid!" Look how dirty politics killed Brian Jordan last time... It doesn't have to be true, just cast the doubt, just cast the doubt... and the stupid sheep will follow...

It might interest you all to know... It was Carl Rove that tacked "Throw ALL INCUMBANTS OUT!" on to the truthful statement that "Those in power are wrong, throw the Repubs out!"

So if you are throwing all incumbants out, you are a ROVE sheep and very ill informed! Surprise! Dirty does work!! and yes Rove is a dirty genius! (If we throw them ALL out the REPUBS win <--- STUPID!)

I am already in so much trouble with my friends for 'fighting back'. But when Hunter made Emily's child fair political fodder, I lost it, in the nicest possible way I could, only what I personally heard and saw. I thought I was being nice... not calling the cops.

POOR lackey...
sorry you have no life
but trust me
my 'intelligence' says to me
if I really want to go negative
i won't mess around here with ALL you small potatoes..

I will go straight to the TV stations, with video in hand,
nothing speaks louder than the truth, and a picture is worth a thousand words!!!!!

Gary would never get over it!

Now you can call me on the carpet for MY ALOHA SPIRIT!
But again you would lack!

It is simply politics as usual!
Better grow a thicker skin!
Grow up and answer the hard questions!
or call me names and again ignore the truth!

Let me answer your next question:
"Why don't I go to the news with MY PROOF?"

Because, my friend, Emily would slap me to the ground so fast,it would cause another earthquake!

(because 'out here' yes in a way i do represent her...)

And IT IS NOT< NOR WILL IT EVER BE HER WAY.

I want and need her love and friendship
when all the dirty politics are done and ...
we are all (ALL) loving each other and trying to work together next wednesday!

She has taught me so much and I respect her!

But my bes' sista is Auntie Dottie and she would kill me!
(And she still might, cause we all got 'ordered' not to come here and enter the frey, to only present ALOHA FIRST no matter how bad we got hit!)

Well I am out of line from my own group, but again when the politics get like daggers in the childrens' backs, I harken back to my colorado cowgirl past and get on my boots to wade thru the crap and strap on my guns to blast back!

Don't blame Emily for my bad self!
She said no and I did it anyway!
And unlike so many
this is my real name and reputation!

Auntie Faith
(my mom named me faith because she had Faith things would get better, I am not sure they have!)

And that is why I am voting for Emily, I voted for Gary and he has treated us so meanly, I am voting for Emily NOW because I really would like to be more like her...

I would gladly give up my degrees, intelligence or whatever it is you worship LACK!

To be just a tiny bit more like Emily!
I mean this with all of my (irrelevant????-Lack) heart!

Turnout for another BIG WAVE Nov. 6 Monday 4pm Keeau

Or 8am Malama Market Saturday Nov 4 (tomorrow) for some wonderful surprises!!!!

I am sorry Emily, I did it again!
Please forgive me!

just a bad cowgirl, not from here...

Just Vote!

Getting back to the subject,it seems that Brenda Ford's group has discovered that the Citizens for Kona group has an address that belongs to Rick Vidgen so this is why Binder was slamming Vidgen at the Gov's Advisory mtg on Monday. The radio ads still continue to date. But even if this group might be backed by a developer's money and the group was late in registering itself, what is the final bottom line? Jail time? Court hearing? Penalties?
And as much as I am leary of republicans, what is wrong with Vidgen supporting Virginia's candidacy? Doesn't Brenda Ford have ads in the WHT showing Angel Pilago and Pete Hoffman blatantly supporting her? Now how ethical is that? No class, just no class. Shame on Pilago and Hoffman.
Furthermore, I wouldn't necessarily call Dominic Yagong "pro environment" as Sierra Club thinks he is.
Hunter's right, if Brenda Ford gets in, Puna will suffer. Remember, Ford is for the impact fee ordinance which will severly impact the local resident. Virginia used to live in Puna when she first moved to the island 40 or 50 years ago so she knows that the survival of Puna and Kona depend upon the entire island's survival.
Aunty Faith...
I Love Aunty Emily. She has my vote already.
You really should just take this site off your computer, and stay far away from here. Emily was right. 'No talk bad!' You are sure to cost her votes, and respect, with your blogging on this site. You've become to involved in the political Mud-Slinging, causing it to intensify with each new entry. Step back, take a few deep breaths, and let go. Use your time to work with Emily on the positive side!
As for signs being stolen....there has been at least 1 report made to the police. But basicly, the theft of signs is usually a desperate move by the opposition. Very seldom is the actual candidate or committee involved. Someone on the outside "tries to help"....maybe to make themselves more important to the candidate. Pity the poor souls! Their desperation must be intense!
November 3, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterA Friend
Nativeroots, even though I don't live in district 7, I hope
Brenda Ford beats Virginia Isbell. I really believe Mrs. Isbell really has been siding with the East Hawaii council members, negatively impacting West Hawaii. Plus she supports that Godforsaken Jacoby development by the harbor in Kona.

We need to slow down development here. The infrastructure
needs to catch up before we allow anymore development. Implementing a concurrency ordinance, mandating infrastructure to be built at the same time or before development commences is the only way we can catch up
with our dire infrastructure problems.

Yes construction and real estate are key cogs to our
economy.Developers know this, thus they shove all this development on us. Hence why we need to wean ourselves from being so dependent on construction/real estate.Diversifying our economy is critical for the longterm health of this island.

You may think I'm a whiner and a idiot. But I deeply am
concerned about the future of this island. Too many agendas
and divergent opinions are factionalizing this island.

There is quite a few days I yearn for how Kailua-Kona used
to be when I was younger :(

The proper term is "Sierra Club endorsed", not "Sierra Club backed."
I am a Sierra Club member (recently rejoined after 25+years out) and have listened to Club discussions regarding endorsements. Anyone (for or against the endorsed candidates) who thinks this is about power plays really does need to take a deep breath and chill out.
The Club looks at voting records, and to responses to questionairres and interviews. All candidates are treated the same prior to endorsements. This is the way lots of groups operate. What's the big deal?
November 4, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterJames Weatherford
Aloha James,
You'll have to excuse me for no longer having any respect for a group who endorses a Senator who voted to drill Anwar. "Rethinking" the issue is an excuse that doesn't fly. His actions speak louder than his words. So do the Sierra Clubs actions. Talk about Power plays....this is nothing but a sell out. You're endorsements no longer hold water.
November 4, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterA Friend
Akaka has described his vote to drill in Anwar as based on what he thought the indigenous Alaskans wanted after he met with their representatives. This is really a result of his desire to get his Native Hawaiian recognition bill passed. That bill was the only real legislation of any note the man ever put forward, and it failed. He has toed the Sierra Club line most of the rest of the time, and if the Democrats take over Congress, he may get another shot at his bill. Otherwise, he is pretty worthless, except as a reliable vote against Bush, which can be useful, I guess.
November 4, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterRex
Aloha 'Friend and Rex,

My sentiments are pretty close to 'Friend about Akaka -- in a democratic process every one does not get their way every time.
My comments were not about whether Sierra Club endorsements are great or not -- my point was/is that just because Sierra Club endorsed certain candidates does not mean Sierra Club has some extraordinary power over the Council, which was the implication of a couple of postings here (in fact, your disillusionment with the Sierra Club reinforces my point!).
November 4, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterJames Weatherford
James,
Thank you.
I really don't think most endorsements amount to much in the candidates actions (if they are elected). More to let the membership know who the group recommends voting for. Especially the more local the elections! You have to live with the voters!
November 5, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterA Friend
Aaron your wish to have Kona back to what it was before what it is now conflicts with your complaining on Kona not having enough roads or infrastructure. As a general rule, infrastructure comes with a big price tag and encourages more development so be careful what you whine about. As far as infrastructure goes, unless you are willing to pay a lot more in property taxes to "catch up with infrastructure" sometimes "development" could be a good thing in financing needed infrastructure. As far as Jacoby goes, DHHL already made a contract with Jacoby and there is no way that they are going to break a contract that they made in accordance with their master plan for the area. I like that Isbell understands this and stands up for DHHL unlike Ford who has no clue how DHHL operates and Pilago (a Hawaiian) who has no guts to support DHHL..
The larger acreage owned by DLNR is still up for adjustments and the draft EIS that is soon to be out will give us an opportunity to comment. 2 years ago, the community asked for a larger small boat harbor in the area, Jacoby's plans call for the larger harbor although I feel that 800 slips on 40 acres is over-kill.
I don't think Isbell favors all of the Jacoby project but she DOES support the part of it on DHHL property and I see nothing wrong with that.DHHL always does its part to give to the community. In the neighborhood that I came from (Keaukaha) they built a school, community play ground and gym. I disagree that Isbell "sides" with East Hawaii when everything that she has done so far was always FOR the benefit of Kona and the 4 council members who voted with her understood this. She was opposed by Pilago and Hoffman when she asked that truck trash from Hilo to Kona be stopped. She was blamed for congestion when she voted in favor of the affordable housing project in Puapua'a. When people don't understand that building housing in the urban core helps cut down on congestion, they are never going to understand why she votes the way she votes. Its too bad that many of the vocal kona voters are that stupid.
