The 'best-connected journalist' in Puna.

The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

No "Fore!" in Puna

A good example of what results when you complain loudly enough for a long enough time is listed in the current weekly county newsletter. Two terrific golf courses in West Hawaii are now designated county municipal courses -- Makalei and Waikoloa Village -- allowing residents to play at low municipal fees. Kona people have long griped about the lack of recreational facilities, especially the fact that Hilo has a municipal golf course and Kona had none, and how they're being cheated out of their tax money, blah, blah, blah. But look what happened.

Now Kona has two real spiffy muni golf courses, Hilo has one pretty good one, and Puna has, well, anyone notice? Not one golf course.

Technically West Hawaii still doesn't have a muni course.
The county was able to negotiate lower green fees with
Makalei and Waikoloa (Which will expire in the near future)

Golf courses are not all there cracked up to be. They evidently cost 1 million a hole to build and have costly
reoccurring fees. Take the Hilo Municipal Golf Course, it
is my understand it is always in the red.

Aaron is right. There are more important areas where Puna has been neglected, such as law enforcement, parks, transportation, water, etc.
