The owner

I was a reporter for close to 17 years at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald until October 2005, when I joined the growing ranks of union leaders now formerly employed by the newspaper. (For more about what's happening at the Tribune-Herald, check out the Hawaii Newspaper Guild web site.) Since then I've been the Hilo unit representative for the Guild, a freelance writer, photographer, and blogger.  Puna has been my family's home since 1993.

Hawaii Youth Campaign Aims at State Legislature

Pahoa, HI – May 23, 2008 – Lifelong Pahoa resident Anthony Marzi announced his candidacy for the state House of Representatives district 4 seat last week. The first-time candidate is challenging incumbent Faye Hanohano for the democratic nomination.

However, there is a twist. Anthony Marzi is only 23 years old. His campaign manager is a 23-year-old electrician, and his strategist is a 19-year-old senior at the University of Hawaii. In fact, dozens of Anthony Marzi’s volunteers are under the age of 30.

Marzi is catalyzing a new wave of political candidates. “For years, our politicians have won votes by promising a new hope for our youth. They promise greater educational funds, improved transit systems, and economic development to create new jobs. These promises are usually empty,” the candidate says. “I am here to represent Hawaii’s students and young adults. I’m here to represent for our district’s youth and be the voice of our district’s future in the State House.”

From 25-year-old Iraq veterans to 7-year-old second graders, Puna’s youth are jumping aboard Marzi’s campaign. Because many volunteers are young adults with limited funds and resources, the campaign is taking innovative steps to get recognition. Marzi and his volunteers are creating their own website, constructing signs, writing pamphlets, and walking door-to-door to spread their message to the community.

Nevertheless, Marzi insists that his campaign is aimed at citizens of the entire district. “Although I am a representative of the youth, I am committed to our community as a whole. I have met with many of our district’s parents, leaders, and kupuna, and have learned much from their concerns and advice. The wisdom of our elders and passion of our youth will enable us to create a better lower Puna for this and future generations.”

Anthony Marzi currently works as a part-time teacher at both Hilo and Laupahoehoe high schools. Prior to this, he served as a scientific technician at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he collaborated with the Ground-Based Nuclear Explosion Monitoring Group to sustain nuclear non-proliferation. Marzi also worked as an emergency management consultant for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands.

Marzi attends the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and is one semester away from receiving his Database Certification and bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
